The images are good in their choice of subject and basic composition, IMHO only having a detail in common that detracts. Each image has a distracting bright line in the background.
In the first one a bright yellow diagonal line cuts across the subject and, unfotunately, the over-bright background doesn't help. Not much can be done about that without using fill-in flash, but the yellow line might be able to be cloned out.
The boat pictures also have a bright band, this time across the top. The subject matter is excellent and I think with a shift in camera position the background could be cleaned up, leaving us with a very strong image. It looks to me as though you either need to shoot from higher up or, alternatively, from ground level looking up so a (hopefully blue) sky might provide a bland background.
In picture 2 the blue bottom left could be cloned out as well.

Blue sky as a background? That would have been nice. It rained every day! Although there were a few hours of sunshine, so I do have a few pics with a blue background.
When we've finished unpacking and sorting ourselves out, I'm going to get working with paintshop, so I'll bear your comments in mind.
I'm glad you liked the basics. It's funny, but I finally think I am "seeing" the picture better, the more photos I take.

I love the colours in the second one, and it is a great subject. I would agree with John that shooting from standing up would isolate the boat better. Have a go at cropping it. You might lose the back end of the boat but I don't think that will matter and I bet you get an even stronger image.
I like number 3 also , but again get in a bit closer to remove the distractions of the background.
