Just out of interest would it be improved with heavy cropping from the right and a bit less from the left? The colours and the way the head and beak/bill work are great but thee expanse of body doesn't seem needed to me.

It is heavily cropped already, I was going to discard the shot tbh and then at the last moment I saw the eyes on the middle duckling, zoomed in and wondered if I could get a decent picture out of a crop.Just out of interest would it be improved with heavy cropping from the right and a bit less from the left? If I do as you suggest I would maybe have a better picture but also a square crop and for some reason I have a real dislike of those (don't ask me why because I don't know).
I will have a go and see what it looks like though

Beautiful shot.Only thing i would add is a highlight for the eye to give a little "twinkle"

I like the square crop the best, followed by the original crop. A gem of a photo from what looked like a dud initially - well done!

am i the only one who has noticed that the duckling on the far right in the uncropped shot is a tufted duckling not a mallard? i've seen a lot of these mixed broods this year and even seen a mallard duckling diving after a tufty was raised in the same brood.

Pentax k1000, MX, ME Super, K5iiD 18-55, Tamron 70-300, Tamron 500 mirror, pentax 10-17, 50 1:4, a manual 28, some extension tubes and a bagful of memory cards. That's all i need... and a load of film cameras too... that's it, honest.
