How do you mean "how does this work"?.. Do you mean "what's it's intention", or are you looking for a guide on how to install the update, Aura?

Press the MENU button on your camera, whilst at the same time switching it on. You should now see the current firmware version displayed on the LCD screen. If the display reads V1.01, you don't need to update, however if the display reads V1.00 (or similar) you might want to upgrade. Here's the link to the firmware download. Select the file called k30v101.EXE, and download it to your desktop. Once completed, go to the desktop and double-click the icon to start the process of obtaining the .bin file. Save the .bin file to a clean formatted sd card, and when that has completed, remove the card from your pc and place it into your camera. Make sure that the camera is switched off for this. Now, check the specific instructions in your camera's manual for guidance on how this update should be done (it may just be a case of switching this camera on). Once the upgrade begins, DO NOT power down the camera, so make sure that you have fully-charged the battery first. Once complete, you are good to go!!

Aura - in reality, it's simplicity in itself. The only thing I'll need to gen up on is how to activate the .bin file in this particular camera (I'll PM you once I've sussed it).
The update apparently improves the performance, and also improves the contrast AF.
On the other thread I'd linked earlier (above), another member says that he'd noticed the improvement, so it's worth the update.
Are you running a Windows or a Mac computer?

You could ask your local camera shop I suppose, but they will possibly charge you for it.
Having read up on it, all you have to do is extract the .exe file when you have downloaded it. This then presents you with the .bin file. Copy the .bin file onto a clean formatted sd card. Place the card (which now has the .bin file loaded onto it) into the camera's card slot whilst the camera is switched off. Once in place, power up your camera.
Next, press the camera's MENU button on the back of the camera, then using the 4-way controller, scroll along until you land on the SPANNER icon on the top of the LCD screen. Now, scroll down to the bottom until you land on FIRMWARE VERSION. You should now see a little green arrow to the right of this. Press the 4-way controller at the 3 o'clock position - this should now open up a sub-menu. In this sub-menu, it will ask you to UPDATE FIRMWARE - press to activate it.
Your LCD screen should now display "NOW LOADING", then after about 15-20 seconds your camera will either power itself off automatically, or stay active with the LCD screen now reading "COMPLETED".
Switch the camera off after a few seconds, remove the sd card (reformat it on your pc to remove the .bin file - you will then be able to use the card to take your photos onto) - et VOILA!!.. Your camera is now updated!!
Trust me, Louise - it really is that easy!!

Another question to ask. My PC for some reason doesn't like zip files, can I use the EXE file to download the update?Press the MENU button on your camera, whilst at the same time switching it on. Also where do I need to go to save the file onto my SD card?
I have a card reader and that saves to E drive, I think.

Yes, the .EXE is simply an uncompressed version which contains the .BIN file. When you see the .BIN file (you should see it displayed in a dialog box), right-click it, then COPY to the SD CARD. You will see the SD CARD displayed in the left-hand column along with other links to folders, etc. Single (left)-click on the link to the SD CARD until it is highlighted (it will have a pale-blue bar through it). Keep your mouse pointer hovering on this link, then right-click and PASTE it in. To confirm you have done so successfully, double-click the link to the SD CARD, and you should see the .BIN file there (and NOTHING else). If you have all that, then you are "good to go".
After that, follow the instructions that I previously posted here.
