Beside that i did not recomend anything for portrets, only explained the differnce it can make in the lighting.

You missed my post it seems, here is a diy solution but you can also buy them with velcro. Having the beam of light strike the centre of the brolly seems to be an important aspect of the strobist set-up. Having a brolly set up on a separate stand seems to be the way to go. This begs the question- why doesn't somebody design a bracket that would overcome this problem-there could well be a gap in the market!

The answer therefore is you need both! Or a combination umbrella like Brian has. But shoot-through seems easier to get delish results when you're taking your first steps and is cheap. A couple of cheap reflective umbrellas are on my Ebay watchlist! Not sure about expensive combi-umbrellas. My rig seems to get damaged pretty regularly - not because it's flimsy, but because it gets covered in flying paint, or gets caught by the wind and comes crashing down! I bought tent pegs to stabilist the stand against the wind but never seem to remember to use them... probably cos you need to move the stand a lot when you're getting the light 'right'.For single person not for a whole group

I'm of the mindset that it's better to get cheap basic stuff and start shooting, and work out what upgrades you need (or don't need) as you go along. Rather than be frozen by thinking you need to only buy the best, and spend a long time gnawing your nails over what to buy only to find out you don't get on with stobism and end up listing the whole lot on Ebay....

Umbrella's outside are no fun indeed.
We only used "closed" modifiers outdoor, they seem a bit more stable when it comes to wind.

If I recall correctly, CotswoldPhotography on eBay to brackets which will allow you to turn the flash and "point" it down line so it'll be closer to the center of the umbrella
