I took this today (24/07/09), on the South Bank in London.
If anyone can name the tree I would appreciate it, as it would help me with a title for this image.

Very nice shot - it is indeed a London Plane, and a common tree in London. As I understand it, they were planted all over the city over the past couple of hundred years or so because they are particularly well suited to dealing with the smog caused by lots of coal! I think the peeling bark may have something to do with this ability. And my dog is addicted to eating it! But then he's a labrador so he's addicted to eating full stop.....

Thanks guys.

Come to think of it, the majority of trees on the streets of London do tend to be London Planes.

Have been to London briefly (too briefly!) but didnt notice the trees.

The photo reminds me a patchwork or a weaved carpet.
At least if to take this as a pattern, the result would be very beautiful.
Beautiful as the photo

What a lovely soft colours !

Thanks Aiki.

The bark texture reminds of van Gogh's paintin' style.
