TIFF to JPEG

I'm currently using Sandisk RescuePro to find some lost images and ones that I shot using DNG are being shown but there are some that are listed as RAW---TIFF. These were saved in the PEF format as the Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4 is showing these, I think in 8 bit format.

Using either the Pentax software or Silkypix Pro (which doesn't show them either) or any other software for that matter, does anyone know how I can covert these images to JPEG?

Hi Rob,

I think you are saying that your data recovery file has recovered files which were written in the PEF format but are showing up as a different file type (RAW---TIFF).

The extesnsion of the file name (the bit after the ".") indicates to your operating system and programs what the format of the file contents is, so if thats wrong then the file appears to become unusable. So a PEF file always needs to end .PEF for it to be recognised correctly by your program.

If its a case of wrongly typed files then save the files with the names suggested by the software then renmame to have the extension to be "PEF" then magicaly (if they are PEF files) you will be able to convert them using the Pentax software or Silkypix.

I have noticed that PEF files are sometimes wrongly detected as TIFFs by software which can't handle them properly, I think the encoding Pentax use in PEF is similar to (or based on) that of TIFF.

As Bob said, try re-naming the files to something.pef and see if you can open them in Pentax lab or your RAW converter of choice.

Interestingly though some were being displayed yesterday as NEF files...at first I thought they were N***n RAW files(?) but actually they were Nero Encrypted Files and these were visible.
