Pentax 12-24mm f4 users

Hi all,

Looking to get a wide angle. I use my 21mm limited as wide angle, but sometimes its just not wide enough.
So, im starting to have a look around.

What are your thoughts on the 12-24 f4? Is it worth the near £500 price mark.
Im also looking at the 14mm prime, as I like the prime lenses.

Both are expensive lenses, although there is £50 cash-back to help.

An unqualified "thumbs up" for the 12-24mm, a brilliant lens. Very accurate drawing (low distortion), super sharpness and an excellent all round performer.

I too am a fan of primes but I have to say the 12-24 is the most "prime-like" zoom I've ever used. A big thumbs up from me too.

I'm starting to be persuaded now too...

I fancy a wide angle lens and was going to buy the DA16-45 but thought it may not be wide enough.

If i go for a wide angle lens i was looking at the DA12-24 or the Sigma 10-20. Although if i go for the Pentax it will have to be soon to get the cash back.

I am going to have a look around and see this lens.

Is it possilbe to use Cokin P filters on the 12-24 without the filter or filter holder showing?
Also, can a UV filter be used without effecting the image. I think this lens has the SP coating, but with a bulbus glass, might need protecting.

The SMC Pentax DA 12-24mm lens has only the normal SMC coating, not the water & dust resistant coating.

I use the Cokin P Wide Angle Holder (the one with just a single slot instead of the standard 3 slots) on this lens and it's invisible down to 13mm with barely perceptible edge shading at 12mm.

I personally don't use a UV filter, I just make sure the hood's always attached. Shouldn't be any problem if you do want to use one though

The 12-24 has revolutionised my photography. It also taught me a few things:

I had to think harder about composition at wide angle.
Focus then recompose is very dangerous at wide angle.
The angle of the camera to the subject is very important(two examples being - faces at the edge of the image can seem distorted - keeping parallel lines parallel, such as walls when shooting inside).

Parden me for posting this if it seems obvious to the experts, but I hope this might help!

I have been amazed by the quality of what I've produced with this lens.

I do have a UV filter attached to mine with no problems. It is a lovely lens but as El Dingo said, ultra wide does require a bit of thought! I tend to have that lens attached to my camera most of the time even though I tend to use it more at the 24mm end.

Hi all.

After much debate and reviewing, I got the 12-24 Pentax over the 10-20 Sigma.
I have sent the claim form away to claim the £50 back.

Any idea how long the cashback offer takes to return.

Hoping for some good weather now, so I can try out the new lens

I have the DA12-24mm, its a great lens. Wide enough to use in a small space. Good colours and contrast.
