Please, I hope I haven't learnt an expensive lesson. If so, please pass on to others, so they can learn from my ignorance! I had my sensor cleaned yesterday by Pentax. Today my camera doesn't work. I left it in the car in my gadet bag, with my Nikon Coolpix point and shoot. Has the heat damaged the camera? All I get when I turn it on is "AV" flashing and the number of pictures showing up on the display. The shutter release doesn't work, the flash will not activate using the button to pop it up. The menus show. I can see photos taken that are stored on the card. But no go on more shots!

I just bought a Macro/ and a 300mm. Now I'm out of business.
I can't afford another camera! If it requires a rebuild $$$$$??

Never leave cameras in a hot car, it's asking for problems and they could get stolen as well.

I would check the lens is fitted firmly, recharge the battery and make sure the camera is not in playback mode. Check the AF setting isn't locking the shutter because you're not in focus. Perhaps reset the defaults to make sure nothing has been set oddly for you. Is the lens set on "A"?
Best regards, John

I'm so glad we have this form. Thankyou, for your prompt response. All is well. The lens wasn't set on "A" properly. I'm up and running. Thanks again, now maybe I can get some sleep! Thanks again. Good night.

So glad you're sorted !!

I very well know that awful sinking feeling you get when something expensive that's also your pride and joy stops working... and you suspect it's cos of something dumb you've done.

Most of us have been there... and re your , most of us have also learned that it's MUCH, MUCH better to briefly feel a bit foolish over missing some minor thing, than be stuck with an expensive repair and lengthy downtime.

reminds me of a BMW K100 I bout years ago.
The old fella who sold it to me, warned me of a loud rattle (left side) on cold startups. He was certian of valve problems (the engine lies flat on it's side with a vent directly over top where the valves and fuel injectors are) or faulty fuel injection. But everytime he took it in for servicing, could not repeat the problem....the engine was too warm.

He was a kind old man, losing his eyesight, crippled in one leg. Told me about how he used to ride with his (recently deceased) brother.

I got the bike home (I couldn't possibly afford a bike at that time, and a $6000.00 bike for a grand, was a no lose proposition for a guy who can fix things).
Sure enough the next day, there was a horrendous, loud ratlle/knock noise that could be heard down the block. Not the kind of noise one would expect, the accoustics were somehow different. With the handle of a screwdriver pressed up to my ear (and the tip of the screwdriver used as aprobe) I quickly ruled out the valve covers, and injectors as source of the sound. To my dismay the sound was comming from the glove box!
He had told me about how a cleaning solution had damaged the surface of the windscreen and how he'd replaced it with one bought from a police bike.

The glovebox is above the vent on the leftside, over the valves. The hollowed area between the bottom of the glove box and the top of the valves is for airflow, from the radiator. Made a great echo chamber/amplifigher for the nuts and bolts he had left over from the old windshield.
He had left them in the glovebox. It was normal for this bike to vibrate on cold starts.

I did go back, explain, and offer to let him out of the deal.

I got some stories about his brother, and told a deal is a deal and he was happy to see the bike go to someone that was as passionate about motorcycles and as honest as his brother had been.

Sounds like we have the makings of an underground economy here...

Which of your lenses (or other Pentax-related goodies) would you trade for a couple gallons of Grade A syrup ?
(it's a bit late in the season for the fresh stuff - but I'm sure some of the local sugar bushes have some vintage Spring '07 put away...)

Smuggling? I didn't know Maple syrup was illegal there...

Wow...

Don - those liquers are quite tasty...

I guess we don't generally think of it as anything really special, but I was almost 20 years old before I tasted what's misleadingly referred to as "Syrup" by people that don't realize where it actually comes from, and might not even recognize a maple tree - we generally get about 40 gallons of finished product from our small sugar-bush every spring - some years more, some less,,, Not enough to run a business, but for us and our family and friends it's enough. There is a down side - some of our family and friends help keep a few of the local dentists happy... I was cured of my maple addiction when I was diagnosed with diabetes - well, maybe cured isn't the right word... I still want it...
