Spitfire Flypast (3 pics)

Went to a Spitfire flypast this morning to celebrate the centenary of some chaps death and so decided to use the K-7 properly for the first time along with the SIgma 100-300mm f4. Not sure if it was me lowering the shutter speed too much to get decent prop blur but I came away with only 6 or 7 decent shots out of 90. Considering the pics from the air show I did last year with the K10D were pretty good I was a little disappointed.

Yet there's nothing wrong with these Mike - maybe it's a matter of getting accustomed to using a different body, and under these fairly specific shooting conditions?

I can`t see anything wrong with the set either Mike - love #3 especially

I am actually wondering if it's because I turned off SR after reading on another forum that you shouldn't use it when panning.

I went to the local airport for a quick practice yesterday and they were all spot on.

Well both the Duchess and the jet (love those wing fences!) are spot on as you say Mike. K7 restored to the top shelf then?

Nice shots and although not an aircraft fan I like how the propellers have turned out. It clearly shows that this is of the 4 bladed variety which means an expert could date it.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this were the reason. If you have the shutter speed slow enough to get decent prop blur, of course you're likely to get shake.

Sorry to get on my favourite hobby horse yet again, but the whole subject of SR does seem to get a disproportionate amount of anecdotal, unthinking, evidence-free nonsense cropping up on forums.

The notion that the accelerometers can be fooled into detecting shake when there isn't any is probably wrong in all (ha - famous last words, eh!!) cases, not just the now-legendary 'stationary tripod' case.

In particular, I can't see how actual shake, superimposed on to smooth, constant-speed movement would be detected by the camera any differently from shake superimposed on no movement at all, which is exactly what SR is for.

Of course, with aircraft approaching you and then receding, you have to pan more quickly and then less quickly as it passes by, but that acceleration and deceleration is at least one, probably two orders of magnitude less than the sort of accelerations SR is designed for, so can be ignored I should think.

Leave SR on, you know you want to!!

To be honest I don't know why I took any notice .. I have always had good results with it on and never once switched it off when using the K10D.

I *so* know what you mean. I'm chucking stones around in my own glass house, I have to confess.

My speciality is, I try something just as a one-off, and then leave it set, and end up missing a bunch of shots because I forget to unset whatever it was.

That kind of thing is annoyingly easy to do. I reckon the one 'mode' that would be useful would be a 'muppet' mode that the camera can never switch on in. So you could muck about with the settings in muppet mode, safe in the knowledge that at least when it powers back up you default to not being a muppet.

I'd say they're good. They're not great. With no cockpit visible at all, they're a bit impersonal.

Great is where they'd be sharper, and banking towards, not away.

Much harder, much rarer.

To be great, it needs to be better.

Just for calibration, most of Mike's aircraft work I like very much, but I'd agree with him that these aren't in the same league as what he showed us last year.

(Note to self: Farnborough coming up, must put money where mouth is. Fingers crossed....)
