The test was valid for the batteries tested. I use the same type of chargers and dischargers. "As found" capacities were accurate.
The only unknowns are at what voltage level does a Pentax camera shut down? Is it a slow as 3 volts per cell as per the test?
I use 3rd party cells as well as the originally supplied camera battery. Never really had any issues.
As for extra capacity, I have a cheap K7 grip that I am butchering to put in a 2 cell Lithium Polymer battery as used for RC models. Just for the sake of trying it out.
As for the battery blowing up or damaging your camera, unless it is overcharged or fast charged incorrectly, the battery has no reason to burst and certainly no reason to output a voltage higher than its 2 cell capability. The question of damage to a camera is more likely to occur through a camera fault pulling too high a current and damaging itself through overheating or burning.
The prices quoted seem fine as you pay more for more capacity. Just how much more is up to the individual.
Another issue is the self discharge rates at various temperatures. I tend to charge before I use the camera, regardless of battery state. The higher temperature climates accelerate self discharge.
With the amount of sunshine in Oz I should consider a hat top solar panel and switch mode converter and run from Solar (only daylight photo's of course).
