Sorry Pentax - Switching to Nikon

After very poor releases from Pentax. I decide to switch to other brand - Nikon. Please help me to justify my decision or give me some serious reasons to stay. I love my K5 but I like to move forward not backward. Below I listed all stuff which I think is important and is missing in the current Pentax product range where is easy available from other brands.

My K5 11 point focus - Nikon D90 - £350 - 11 points focus I shoot often with focus point picking with bright lenses (portraits), very small DOF and many times I missed the focus area as I have to tilt the camera back and forth to focus in desired area.
AF-C Continuous Focusing - It`s a joke + slow focusing lenses.
Flash - Pentax AF 540 FGZ - over £300 for 7 years old design - Nissin - great flashes not for Pentax.
Flash speed sync - 1/180 - no comments.
Lack of accessories - wireless triggers - only Chinese rubbish available for Pentax.
No tethering software except one developed by Tomasz Kos - PK_Tether.
Most of the items from third party brands are not compatible with Pentax - there is all sort of accessories for Panasonic cameras but not for Pentax - sad !
Viewfinders - forgot to get one in the UK .
Pentax TTL cords - they only looks nice on pictures - almost impossible to get in the UK.
SDM in lenses - I`m the owner of the second - brand new, almost £1000 worth 50-135mm lens (made in 2012) with SDM issue and focusing problem. According to this article this problem was solved in lenses made in 2012 - not my one ?!

And the last one - no future with Pentax without FF on the horizon.

There are many other issues I think about but those are the most important for me. I like to move forward not backward as I do now staying with Pentax.

Well with all the points you have made there really isn’t much point for you to say with pentax?
Nikon does sound right for you?

iam not happy really with the K5 mark 2 without the FF but I do like the photos that my K5 K7 KX KM take and with all the lens that I have, iam very lucky to have found a camera that iam at home with. So what ever your choice is? that you make good luck with it and hope you get it right.

I`m not trying to compare the cameras. I know everything about my Pentax K5 and I love this camera, I`m just focusing on weaknesses not improved from a long time.

is this some kind of wind up or joke ? You say you mov forward not back and then talk about a Nikon model that is several generations old ??? am I missing something ?


Fair enough if you talked about a mor eupto date Nikon or Canon or whatever but D 90 ?? I'm puzzled

Personally, I tend to agree, and I think if the Pentax community was a lot less accepting of the Pentax deficiencies, it would be better for the brand.

However, in fairness, which brand is right for you depends on what you want to do with the camera, not on some notional comparison of features between brands.

I think you are. The point he's making is that the K5, a modern camera, has only 11 focus points.

As has the D90, which is an old camera.

I think the point is that the Pentax's flagship camera has not moved forward much in terms of AF - it's still a long way behind the competition when it comes to action shots.

And the K5-2 still has only 11 points.

Old news though. If you want to be a sports tog, Pentax probably isn't the brand to have.

I am always harping on about the lack of AF points on Pentax cameras but it seems the new FF Canon 6D only has 11 and out of them only one is the cross type.

So therefore I have to ask myself ... hey, maybe I'm wrong and they are right.

That is good point . Big + for Pentax.

I have to say only one thing I`m afraid in other brands is the build quality, nothing is comparable to Pentax K series.

Looking at your list of gripes I think you failed to research your purchase in the first place. None of the things listed were a secret, if you want fast focusing and tracking , full frame upgrade path , extensive third party ranges and widely available accessories then Nikon provide all of these things better than Pentax whose strengths lie elsewhere.

see a lot depend son the type of photography we do - things that can be crucial to one can be 100% insignificant to another so would not cross minds.

I mainly shoot dereliction and abandonment and manually focus 95% of the time when doing so ..so I don't need any focus points for much of my output..though of course when I'm not shooting that .....

And also (for me anyway) Pentax IQ is way ahead of both Canon and Nikon.

Which is why, even though I have a 7D with 19 AF points and an all singing all dancing AF system I pick up the K-5 90% of the time.

I don`t have a back problem especially that I`m often walking with my Pentax K5 + 50-135mm + Sigma 8mm-16mm + Pentax 67 + tripod + 200mm 67 lens, so don`t worry about my back nice exercise.

My research was based on my lack of knowledge as I start DSLR photography just over 2 years ago from Pentax K7 after that I get K5 and I love the camera but sometimes I`m sad that I can`t get this what I want or need.
