I have been asked to photograh a large running event this weekend and am currently in discussions over the exact requirements. This will be a paid job.

The initial brief I've been given is...

'the focus would be more on capturing the essence of the event rather than just the runners..... for use on facebook future publicity etc.'

The individual involved has seen the sort of pictures I take as I shoot for Sheffield Hallam parkrun, a free voluntary organisation. Examples can be seen on facebook. link Feel free to check the albums out.

My concerns I have are around the restrictions on use of these photos, retaining copyright.

Any thoughts or questions would be appreciated.

Regards

George

Their POV will be that they are paying you for the copyright (or copyright exemption) of the pictures you take at the event...

I would have thought it'd be a fairly standard arrangement for event photography...

I've done a couple of paid events and always simply edited the pics and handed them over... However its not often I get paid for photography and I have now't to lose...

You can also edit the pictures and deliver them with the proviso that they are not to be altered, except for cropping, and that they must give you credits for the pictures they publish.

You don't hand over copytight. You give them a license to display or print

Thanks for the comments.

So a license would give them the ability to use the pictures on their website, and to promote the event.

As I retain copyright I presume this restricts them from selling the pictures on, ie of individual runners etc who may want a copy.
