Yet another boring negative post full of regret. If pentax doesn't do what you want then change systems.

It really is that easy. Me im looking forward to the new k-5.

As for focus points nearly all the top studio photographers use centre point and decompose!

Good luck if you do swap systems, but the grass is not always greener.
+1

I shoot plenty of variety, commercially too, flash/studio/field and none of your points have stopped me I rarely had a problem with the original *ist-D, but the K-5 constantly exceeds my expectations for IQ and usability (and I've used other systems too).

I'm looking forward to the K-5 Mark 2

I'm not a top studio photographer but that's the only way I ever focus no matter what type of subject I'm shooting. For me its a quicker and less cumbersome way of doing it.

Should read recompose I suppose although very old photographers (like me) do eventually decompose no doubt

Same here Mike....

D3 or K-5/K20D - simple choice really.....when it's fast action stuff the D3 is the default camera...otherwise I pick up the Pentax - my kit excelled itself during the Pentax camera...whether it was the K-5 or K20D the images have a sort of va va voom quality which is quite compelling, the Nikon just feels cold....

I'm just looking forward to hearing what faults the 6D and D600 come shipped with.....oh hang on only Pentax have faults don't they?

Grass ain't always greener....
So the other way is to get the other brand camera for certain purpose like sport photography, fast moving objects or wildlife ?
It's the Nikon's ability to catch moving objects that I like, but I am talking about equipment that costs substantially more than the K-5 and if and when Pentax launch an FF camera the only response will be cries of protest because it's too expensive....

I love the Pentax for what it can do, which actually applies to 90+% of my photography. The K-5 cannot be compared to a D7K or D90, it's a much better camera, and I had to laugh when I saw images of the D600 with it's scene modes....

It's deja vu all over again.....

Unless you're shooting action I don't see any point in changing systems. I had to laugh when I told an old pro I met in Melbourne recently that the AF on my K5 wasn't working (thanks to Johnsons for fixing the lens release and returning a manual focus camera). His answer was "Aw, diddums". He shoots all his studio work using manual focus and home-made lighting set-ups. His newest camera was an Olympus E510.

A large section of the photographic community seems to have been brainwashed into thinking they must have the latest kit, with all the latest gizmos. Yet some pros are quietly carrying on with kit that most amateurs would consider obsolete.

Hey
Thanks all of you for help in taking decision. All of you are right, I'm an amatour photographer and the K5 is even to much for me so there is no point to complain.

Thanks again.

Must remember that expression

Looking forward to a big lottery win so I can buy them ALL then decide for my self.

Is there an Aladdin's Cave of Pentax gear to visit, like the apparent one for N users featured in the mags (G of Westminster)

Your too late, most of the complaints were lodged when the K5 was launched. The K5 II will be what the K5 should have been two years ago. At least Pentax will get to sell a box full of K5 II's to the faithful.

I won't be buying a D600 with scene modes but I do believe Nikon will sell more of them than Pentax sell K5 II's. Odd how Joe public looks at cameras in a different way to us Pentax users.

Best regards

The trouble is, it really isn't. I can't afford two systems, I love nearly everything about Pentax, except the AF for aviation shots, which is my favourite type of photography. So my choices are to wait for improved AF... or go insane with frustration trying to take sharp images of fast jets... or sell up and change to C or N, both of which, having tried recently, I dislike quite strongly in terms of ergonomics.

I think the point about multiple small focus points is that they help the AF track (and predict) the position of the subject as they pass across them.

Also, the central Pentax focus point is notoriously large, and it doesn't follow that the tiny thing at the very centre of the viewfinder is what will be in focus.

I don't think there's much argument that the Pentax line-up isn't ideal for everyone, sports/action certainly doesn't seem to be high on the Pentax list...I don't blame anyone for moving if the system doesn't meet their needs, forget sentimentality etc it's simply a tool for the job and if it isn't up to it then move on.

Now having said that I do think Pentax cameras are really excellent tools for landscape photography, I have the impression that the K series was developed with this in mind: I'll definitely be sticking with my K5.

I'll be honest, I haven't read the entire thread, but I did pick up on this.
As a landscape photographer who I admire, I have to default to your greater knowledge, but then, I look at simonarron(?) F1 shots and they certainly stand up to anything I've seen elsewhere, and those cars a moving pretty swiftly.
Getting there! Thanks to you guys

They're moving predicatably though. Try a bird. I failed miserably trying to catch a cuckoo in flight a couple of weeks ago. I was with users of both the Canon (7D) and the Nikon (D300s). Both managed it with ease.
