I really need to looked twice since it was so strange but you drive on the wrong side of the road and we on the right side but still it has little purpose

So how does it work Ken,: when a cyclist is in the chequered area does the traffic have to give way to them :

That would be great! No, the cycle lane is supposed to protect cyclists and it is the little red area at the top left corner of the chequered area, it has a crashed bike painted on it.So how does it work Ken,: when a cyclist is in the chequered area does the traffic have to give way to them :

The chequered area means you shouldn't enter it unless you can get out the other end, unless you are turning right. A scene you seldom see!

ahhh I see it now, lol its cute. If they ever bring the Tour de France into your neck of the woods perhaps they could incorporate that little stretch into the race, now that would be a sight too see

Dont know if I've posted this before but from a historical point of view we Brits (and a few others) actually drive on the correct side of the road.
In the days of old when you met a stranger on the road travelers would pass on the right so it would be easy to reach for a weapon if the they turned out to be unfriendly (dont ask me what left handed people did)
Even europeans did this but for some weird reason Napoleon thought passing on the left was much better, so blame him.
As for the USA I believe it had something to do with the design of the horse drawn frieght wagons, it was easier for the driver to see his left wheels than his right to avoid entanglement.

As a cyclist in remission, it looks pretty handy that. I wouldn't like to do a right turn across 2 lanes with 2 lanes on-coming. You go to the cycle lane and turn right when the lights change without running over pedestrians.
