Snow

If you weren't so far, I'd take you for a flying lesson you wouldn't forget (in a sailplane). Couldn't do it in my Cessna, since it is not airbatic.

Well, if I don't have to do the cleaning up afterwards...

Talking about the snow - yesterday late evening (about 9pm) I took my bike, went to the town centre and took few pictures. But it was some snow / rain drizzling, quite unpleasant. What worse it was geting onto the lens all the time. I used DA 16-45mm - it has quite a short hood. Any ideas for a future improvement? I thought about making some longer hood made of cottage cheese cup...

Do you have any other good ideas? And as my lens is not waterproof - I have some concerns about using it in such weather. It survived, although the 'inner tube' (the one which slides out when zooming in) get a bit wet so back home I dried it up few times with a soft cloth, but probably next time I should use some kind of rain cover?

Nothing a gag and a diaper couldn't handle...

I took my k20d out onto the mountains skiing in glencoe a week and a bit ago with my kit lens. It was absolutely fine in blizzard conditions

I would not let a little bit of snow stop me using my camera. My old ME Super have even ended up buried in snow several times without all this panic about weather seals. The only warning I would like to make is to ensure you thoroughly dry the equipment afterwards. Years ago I must have put my old lenses away still damp, because when I picked them up again after several years of non-use some of them were infected with fungus. I now keep my new lenses on shelves where the air can get at them.

As my Samsung GX-20 often produces faulty images when it is cold (see K20D vertical banding thread), I have been using my old unsealed Pentax DS to take to the Scottish mountains with me. I have no hesitation to use it and my unsealed lenses in the snow, besides the DA* lenses are a bit heavy to carry, what with the weight of ice-axes and crampons etc. Note however the rechargeable lithiums I use in the DS can very occasionally make the camera behave sluggishly when the temperatures a well below 0C. The GX-20's battery seems much more robust in this regard.

Weahte sealing is great, especially in torrential rain after a concert in the middle of nowhere (Ilfracombe) walking back to the hotel on a dark path using the built in flash as a torch in 'strobe' focusing mode. The flash is just as sealed as the rest of the camera!

Sadly no snow here in Plymouth, the city is too damn salty!

I wish we had proper seasons down here.

Right now, I wouldn't mind trading the snow for some salt!
