snipping

Am I the only person who didn't know about the Snipping tool in Vista? I was shown it yesterday and shocked to find you can use it to download website images that have had right-click disabled.

If you didn't know it was there type 'snip' into the search box in windows explorer.

Well - I've just got Windows 7 and there is reference to snipping - had no idea what it did but I'll have a look now - I assume it's the same as in Vista?

ken you can use print screen and that will copy whats on the screen then you open photoshop or whatever soft ware you are using.

Open a new doc and just use ctrl V and it with appear in the open window

I only found this out at the weekend.

It gets better !

PrtScn will do ALL your screen (both monitors, if u have 2)
whereas Alt+PrtScn will ONLY do the active App !!

Also if you're having trouble with right click and copy for images (in FireFox ??), use 'View Page Info' (at bottom of list) and then Media Tab, which will list images for u to copy !!

Anything that can be displayed in your web browser can be copied to your local hard disk. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Stu49's Firefox technique will also work in Safari (open activity window, find the desired image from the list of all the page elements, double click it).

I thought there were !? weren't people having problems with eBay pics using FF ?? (u had to switch to IE), they changed it so u couldn't do the usual rightclick and saveas, that's why I added the Media tab method !?

Ebay probably stuck a transparent image over the top of the normal images. Lots of sites have started to do this, especially photo sites. It stops you from right-clicking (which is easily stopped anyway), but more importantly it stops you from dragging the photo to your desktop.

As stated, you can circumvent this technique via several methods, including the Firefox media tab and Safari activity window. Alternatives include finding the URL of the jpeg in the 'page source' and pasting that into the browser address bar, or searching through your browser's local cache and finding the cached copy of the image there.

the bottom line is that in order to display an image on your screen, a website MUST download it to your computer in some form. Once this has happened, no matter what you try to do to prevent it, that image can be copied (strictly at that point it already has been copied, the user has only to gain access to data stored on their own PC).

If you upload images to the internet which you care if someone else uses, the very least you should do is drop the resolution to the lowest level which suits the specific purpose you uploaded it for.

If you plan to make money by selling the images at any point, I recommend you look into more powerful forms of control such as watermarking and the like.

Personally I simply never upload any photo at more than 800 pix along the long edge.

There is apparently (I haven't confirmed this myself, as I switched to Chrome a while ago) an extension for Firefox that specifically kiboshes attempts to disable the right-click menu.

Easier way to do it is to just save the website, you can even say it should put the images in another folder

If you know a bit about the way websites work you can even do a lot more
