I've got one question, What made you think of converting a DNG to a DNG?! I guess if you're doing this Smeggs there's no downside, must give it a try!

Thanks again for taking the time to document your workflow, this kind of info is always useful.

There was some talk a few weeks ago - I think it was on here about DNG sizes and someone mentioned using the convertor to convert the DNG from the Pentax cams. I tried it and it certainly reduces file sizes dramatically. For example a High ISO shot from the K-5 can be well over 30Mb

After conversion it goes down to just over 20Mb. On a shot with 40 or 50Gb worth of data that's on helluva saving.

I've checked and I can't tell any difference IQ wise. Even with sub-atomic pixel peeping

Don't use Lightroom as I'm an Aperture user, so don't know if you have the same options, but don't see why you need an external utility to rename your files, surely Lightroom should handle it?

Aperture, on import, can rename the RAWs and dump them in any folder you like. Might be worth checking to see if Lightroom can do the same as that will save you quite a bit on your workflow. This import can also change all exif, add keywords, automatic adjustments (lens profiles is something I'd love to see in Aperture, then I could auto apply them on import) auto back up to any location etc. etc.

Not trying to start a debate here, just trying to help!

That's a lot of work ! and for what ?? You obviously don't submit to stock as 1.4MP is too small, so what do you do with them ?

Thanks for sharing this, it looks like a good introduction to Lightroom for me.

Also, I respectfully would like to request seeing these "Women's Naked ____" series of yours as I'm *eherm* an art student studying the female form.

yep my aperture workflow seems a lot more streamlined...and automated.. I also don't know if there is such a thing in windoze, but there is a little mac program called "Automator" that combined with Aperture on the Mac can do some pretty neat tricks...
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Yeah Lightroom does do renaming, but it's a kludge compared to the AF5 renamer. The utility is much much quicker. I love it

Yup LR allows develop presets on import which allows even the Lens profiles to be added. Profiles are something I choose to add though. But I do add some developing presets on import such a starting poibnt for sharpening and fill light.

I will add keywords on import in the Finals catalogue too if all most of the pics will have an identical keyword. Its' aesy to select all and add it after though.

Actually it's not as bad as it looks when written down in detail. It's actually a very efficient system for handling a lot of pics.

It would be an awful lot more work if I didn't have lightroom and a system that suits my workflow.

The best thing I ever did was split the process into two seperate Lightroom catalogues, which you could say is analogous to 'Negatives' and 'Prints'

I also convert to DNG but from PEF and it saves quite a lot of room and photoshop loves DNG, so you can directly open DNG files from lightroom to Photoshop without the need to convert them to Tiff or PSD.
It's one click and it directly opens, or one click to Panorama or HDR in PS.

The only thing i don't do is the JPG files, it seems a lot of work and takes up extra room on your disk.
I only use the DNG files and when i do something special in photoshop or it is a very good photo i will also save it as PSD but never to jpg.
For family, friends and internet i do export to JPG but once they have been used i remove them.
