A little help please.
Anyone aware of a commercial produced Lens mounted remote shutter release?
Managed to put one together myself which seems to work quite well but wondered if there was a better quality one on the market.

I presume you mean something more permanent than rubber-banding your wired remote to your lens?

Yes Tim, after something that fits to the Lens.
I used a soft strap, bit of shaped cork and a circuit board mounted micro switch!

I remember in the good old days Novoflex made a shoulder pod with a pistol grip that had a trigger in it.
Finding one may be a challenge but customising it would be more then easy.
Just a thought and maybe not that what you are actually looking for?
Kind regards

It's nice to be nice!

Hi Tom, can I ask how / why you are intending to use this?

Are you thinking of trying to reduce vibrations whilst tripod mounted or did you have another application in mind? Only ask as I've tried something similar, which seemed to work, involving putting the long lens on the video head and 'rubber banding the wired remote' to the handle of the head.

Doing this, I found I could freely zoom with the left hand whilst focussing & shooting and holding the handle with the other. This did seem to help with vibrations, but then I'm going to need to change that technique when I can afford a Wimberley!

If you can share you're log lens technique, I'd appreciate it!

Cheers SmutjeUK but slightly larger than I require

It’s for use on with the FA* 600mm and mounted on a Wimberley head.
What I had in mind is, using the long lens technique, one hand resting on the lens barrel above the tripod head etc.
If the shutter was operated from there it may reduce vibration even further.
If you would like a picture of what I have put together so far just let me know.

The Novoflex pistol grip was a "Follow Focus" you squeezed it to focus. Quite a good lens Scheider or Zeiss made.

I would think pushing a button on top of a 600mm lens would cause more movement. Canon releases are the same fitting so have a look at what they use with long lenses. The Wireless RF-602 is the best release I've ever seen green and red leds come on for half and full press. Shame Pentax don't do that.

Hmmm... how about the IR remote as there are IR sensors on the front of the bodies now? Thinking out loud now!

lay a beanbag on top of the lens and use your hand to trip the normal wired release?
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Once you've used a Wireless release you realise how poor the IR releases are. The RF-602 for £20 ish is absolutely brilliant, you can fire it from your pocket. The green led comes on when half pressed and the red led when fully pressed.

I sometimes stick mine on the table with Blu-Tak and fire the camera from there.

Here's what I ended up with!
One hand holding the camera and the other hand resting on the lens barrel above the tripod head operating the shutter.

Will be interested to learn how it works out in the field.

Have spent most the evening looking at alternatives to the Wimberley, just wondering if it's all positive or if there are any bad words to be said about it as I'm currently saving up hard for one!
