Sigma 17-70 Ordered

After advice from fellow forum members, I have just ordered the above said lens.

after going through my images in adobe bridge lastnight, Most of the images fall in to the 28-70 bracket so it made sence to take the plunge,

How good really is the lens?,I will get a da 300 for my trip to africa/thailand next year

As you've already ordered it - let's see what you think when you get it.

My view - it's a gem
(Only tiny little snag is that it's SDM only and won't work on the screw-drive-only cameras like the *ist-D).

Sdm only , is that only for the pentax version? Or is it hsm only on the sigma version as well?

will take a look i think, i could change my order as it has not been shipped yet!

28mm was too long for me at the wide end which is why I decided to sell the Tamron, but I think it was much sharper at wider apertures than the Sigma which I also had later.
You can also achieve less depth of field as it remains at f2.8 to 75mm.

Spanner in the works now, that tamron looks like an amazing lens and and pin sharp as well, mmm

Whoops! My mistake. I was referring to the Pentax 17-70 That's SDM only.
I don't have any experience with the Sigma.

(If you're working in that range, then the old Pentax FA 24-90 is rather a lovely lens. Very light and compact with beautiful rendering.)

It seems a little strange to order a lens with a particular focal length range, and then start considering another with a completely different range.

I suspect you haven't thought this through.

17-70 is a good general purpose range that will cover the vast majority of situations if you are wandering around shooting opportunistically. 28-75 fulfilled the same purpose on film, but it doesn't on digital. You'll be left without wide-angle coverage.

I kind of knew what i was after the 17-70, but then the thought of having a constant 2.8 made me think twice. Going to local shop now to have a play and then make my purchase from them.

Support the local trade and all that.

It you are after wide angle coverage and a f/2.8 constant aperture why not take a look at the DA* 16-50?

Can I muddy the water further? I looked at the Sigma and its rivals and selected the Tamron 17-50 constant 2.8 and it has served me very well.

Good luck trying to find those lenses in Pentax fit locally !

I did try today, and every local shop, they all said no chance but could rder in, so not sure what to do now

Had a look this evening but a bit over my budget sadly, i was hoping for the slightly longer range as well, looks like a cracking lens though
