Is the old one not HSM?

Consensus is that the old 4-5.6 version is sharper at 10mm. I think there was a HSM variant of the old one although mine hasn't got it. The 3.5 version looks a bit softer at teh edges at 10mm but the distorion looks simpler, and you get an odd number of aperture blades, and more of them, which is nice if you like sunstars.

They're both very good but have a look at Lenstip's review of the 8-16. I'd be tempted by that one I think.

I have the 10-20 and it is very good at what it does IMO, my version is definately not HSM.

I have seen some very good shots from the 8-16 recently so that is worth consideration (but is more expensive I think) every extra millimetre at the wide end seems to make quite a difference.

I should add mine is the 4-5.6

looking at the Flickr group pics from the 8-16, I feel dizzy.

I think I'll stick to my original decision on the 10-20

Well you don't have to use it at 8mm all the time, and image quality and distortion improves across the frame as you zoom in. But yeah for that you have to lug around a slightly larger lens, difficult to use filters etc.

Consider the Tamron too, was a really good lens on my Nikon and gives you a slightly more versatile 24mm on the tele side of things. Was a bit soft on the corners at 10mm though.

I am all torn between the 8-16 and the 10-24 ....

I have tried Panamoz, the item was out of stock though. Or they couldn't get stock at the price listed on their site. They're grey importers I think. I'd get a used f4-5.6 one - they come up regularly on the forum. You can then ask the seller for a sample pic so you know what you're getting.

had initially gone for the F3.5 but Mifsud probably mispriced it at £350. They have sent me an email saying oos and put the price up to £499.


Got mine from Cameraworld who has the F4-5.6 for £300 or so

Just ordered mine for 298 from Cameraworld though if anyone is interested they are extremely low in stock and can only be ordered online now.

Not if you focus close though so that your magnification is higher
