Shutter release on K10D

: HELP On my Istd* I can turn off the shutter when no CF card is in the camera. However I cannot find this function on my K10D. I have read and reread the manual but to no avail. I'm mad as hell as I had taken the card out to download it and the next morning my wife gave me a shout as there was a woodpecker in the garden. As I picked up the camera I set it to jpg and started shooting like a machine gun and thought I had some great shots. Like hell I did.I know it was my fault but once again HELP HELP HELP : Cheers Vic

I'm not aware of a "stop them releasing the shutter when there's no card in the camera" function.

There's a big "No card in the camera" display across the LCD, and a row of dashes in the viewfinder where it usually displays the number of shots remaining, and a crossed out card symbol on the LCD if you do take a picture - but no actual means of preventing you doing it AFAIK.

I can well imagine missing those if you've got it up to your eye the whole time.

I wonder if there was a reason for this. Does Remote Assistant let you get pictures from the camera without a card in it?

Hi ChrisA nice to hear from you again. As I said it was my fault for not noticing all the signs but I was in a hurry to get the woodpecker. If this function does not exist on the K10D I wonder if Pentax might just see the error of their ways and and might release a firmware update if this is possible. Ah well we can live in hope unless someone has another answer.Cheers Vic.

It doesn't exist on the Ds either and I have done something very similar Vic. It is annoying, but I have learned (the hard way) to put the card back as soon as I have downoaded the photos.

Cards are so cheap now... but even when they were expensive I cycled two cards. One card is blank and always in the camera.
When full, I remove it, put in the second card and format it.
Take full card to PC and download.

(It also extends the time you've got to recover an image from the card - if you format the card when you initially put in the camera).

It's really no different to making sure you always put a new film in a camera.

Workflow and procedure should always be the same and if you stick to it it becomes automatic and reduces errors like this to virtually zero.

Apart from 645s which wont fire without film, you have to take the film holder off and put on the rear body cap if you want to test anything without using film stock... just an aside really.

i don't take the card out, i download via usb, then format the card. it may be slower downloading this way but i've had problems with the camera reading the card after it being taken out.

To Matt. I know I know I know. I have two 4Gb 133x cards and as I said in my original post it was my fault. At my age (pre ww2) I'm suffering from SOMETIMERS not quite altzimers. Sometimes I remember and sometimes I don't.
To Ken. Yes I know about the 645 as I used one for years and still have it. The point is that as per the Ist*D you can shoot with or without media and you have control.
To Gwyn. Like you I have now learned my lesson. Here is something that was told to me by an old man when I was just 16 yrs. old. I will show you how to do it. If you make a mistake then thats OK as everyone can make one mistake. Make the same mistake a second time I will not be well pleased. Make the same mistake a third time and you will get the toe of my boot right up your ****.
