Whats the opinion on samsung kit? I'm looking at the 10-17 fisheye and the samsung is somewhat cheaper. Is it the same bit of glass with a different badge on? Or is it different and hence worth the extra for the pentax?

It's just a different badge. Having the Pentax name on it might help with resale value later down the line.

I'd agree with most of that assessment - except the part where a 10-17 owner might consider actually parting with the lens!

Although the basic construction etc is the same, I am not sure that the Samsung has the same coating that the Pentax does. Does anyone know for sure?

Whilst we may not know for sure, the Schneider lenses are multicoated and the reflections look the same as the SMC versions. Given the costs involved, would it be worthwhile making them different for the sake of it?

I'm sure I would quite happily use either version.

I read a lens report on various 50-200 lenses, the canon and nikon didnt do very well the pentax and its samsung "sibling?" were highly rated and more or less said to be of equal merit, the tamron won the day.

Was this the Tamron that was included in the test. : :
I am in the market for a lens of this range and was going to get the Pentax Da 50-200 but if the Tamron is better i may go for that instead. At the price this guy is asking its 50% cheaper also :

I have always tended to avoid the independants. Not so much from performance aspects but more the handling. For a long time the only non Pentax lens I used was the Vivitar 400/5.6 and only because the Pentax equivalent was too expensive. True it is more apparent when using MF but apart from Sigma, all the others focussed the "wrong" way. I am not sure if that also applies to the zoom action. I found that it interupted my picture taking workflow and could cause me to miss photographs because focussing etc became almost instinctive.

With the prevalence of AF these days, it might be less of a consideration but you may want to think about it. Also, if you don't like the Pentax, it will have a better resale value than if you don't like the Tamron.

It's interesting, although I use Pentax almost exclusively on the SLRs, I use a complete mix on the RF. For that I have 1 Zeiss, 2 Leica, 1 Pentax, 1 Canon, 1 Voightlander and 1 FSU lens.
