The colours are indeed rich but, particularly in the first one, I cannot see anything which is sharp. Given the long exposure (1 1/3 seconds I believe?) my guess is that it is suffering from camera shake.
It is a lovely shell, and you could make something very nice with it, but you need get something sharp even if you are playing with a shallow depth of field.
Hope this helps, Kris.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

Thanks for that chris it is a 35mm f2 at f2, camera focus showed green light for focus, would it be the lens as it was on a tripod (cheap one) but it did not have any remote.

Try using the self timer if you do not have a remote. This should eliminate movement from the force of pressing the shutter button. Also turn off shake reduction when using a tripod.
P.s. It's unlikely to be the lens unless it has had a serious knock. Mikew is a big fan of this lens and his shots are sharper than most.

Much better image (and background) - the SR 'off' might make a further improvement, along with a remote. The delay you can dial in with the self-timer is valuable if your tripod is not sufficiently stable - mirror slap will make the tripod vibrate otherwise.

I like the final version. Looks like a decent enough lens. Doesn't macro work show up every little deficiency in technique? You have to be so exacting.

Thanks once again for the helpful advice from all of you,it has helped no end.

but comming onto this forum I have learned quite a lot.
I have taken the next step and will join a camera club.

The third shot is lovely. Plenty sharp enough and I think the background is much better than the first two.
If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.
Apparently.

I have a later 35/f2 so I don't know how the K will compare.
I find it to be a fantastically good lens no qualifications on that at all.
I bought a 6 quid remote off ebay that works fine.
Despite what you think you will not hold a tripod steady by hand - well I suppose I should say in my experience you can't do this.
