SHDC cards

Hi Group on my Pentax K100d I have Version 1.02 firmware, should this support a 8GB sdhc card, I've started using RAW so could do with the capacity, also can anyone recommend a good RAW processor.

I recommend using 2 x 4GB SD-HC cards. Having smaller cards limits your losses should things go wrong.
Those 4GB take some filling up with RAW and it would be cheaper. I use transcend 4GB SD-HC Class 6, and there quick card's

Go HERE for those cards. They are reliable and you will only find them cheaper if you steal them. Oh and forget ebay, there ridiculous price wise

As for raw processing you could go for Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom, Silkypix, Capture 4 Pro just to name a few.

Thank you for replying, I'd never used RAW before, they do seem better, and more sharp detailed pictures, I guess it's because there's no Pentax processing going on, good advice from you both I appreciate it.

You can also use the software which came with your camera - it is based on Silkypix but isn't as good. But is a good free starting place. If you have Photoshop or Elements then you can use Adobe Camera RAW which is bundled with them.

Hi Paul i would agree with scottie on using the 2 x 4gb ones.Then if you know you've got some good snaps you can keep'em safe and use the other card

Cheap isn't allways the way to go with memory cards. I have had some bad experiences with cheap SD cards.
From that moment on the only cards I am using are Sandisk Extreme III cards.

The controller which handles the reading and writing routines is embedded in the memory card and the cheaper cards can use a more simple writing strategy which does not include wear leveling for example.
I know that Matt can tell us a lot more about this.

I would agree that cheap cards are a total no no.

But last week i had an extreme III sdhc go a little bit mad on me.When i was away in bristol i must have taken about 60 shots over 4 days.

When i got back home and loaded the RAW's to the pc i then went to view them on a slide show in Adobe bridge.The first few were ok then pictures started appearing that i had taken about a month earlier



I contacted sandisk who made a case number up for me and they also asked me to download a special formatting tool from a link they gave me which is especially for formatting and repairing sandisk extreme III cards.

I don't have any problems with my other extreme III's i own but time will tell .

Sandisk Extreme's are the worst cards I've ever used. Sometimes I have to insert them three times to be recognised, so I now don't bother. Chinese made I think. Much prefer Japanese made Toshibas hard to find in the UK or Lexar 133x Pro.

Transcend are probably OK, they make one of the best readers, but I would prefer the 150x version of the SDHC link

Amazon do have the Transcend 133x as well for a couple of quid dearer. Pity they don't quote a price including postage.

Sandisk Extreme III cards work just as well as Toshibas for me.

Likewise. Cards are recognised as soon as inserted, every time.

Well, I got 2x 8 GB cards , bought one got one free, I went to the usual camera shop I deal with. He knows I want to buy a new camera so , I think I'm been groomed, which has no effect on me at all. I may not even buy Pentax next time, depends on the price anyway back to the cards.
The cards are call Kingston SDHC grade 4, what ever that means sorry for my ignorance, hope there an OK card.

Anyway, Kingston cards are fine.
