I would advise you to test out the different exposure metering systems (average, centre-weighted and spot) to see which method suits you best. Also check the histogram on the LCD screen - you can easily adjust and do another shot if necessary.

Pentax DSLRs in general expose to protect the highlights.
When desired, you can compensate for it quite easly by using an alternative metering mode, and/or +/- EV Compensation or a manual adjustment.
Get to know the camera more so that you can predict the exposure, and be prepared to take test shots when practicable.
