Setting up K5

If you know what Av mode and iso means, the rest is pretty much non essential and can be deferred until you actually need to know... At that point, time to dust off the manual! Yes the manual looks daunting but... It does have a contents page and an index

Things like the shake reduction thing... Trust your instinct that it should be left on! You don't need it on a tripod but you won't ruin too many shots if you accidentally leave it on... And if you use the tripod and self timer it'll automatically turn itself off...

And preferably weather resitant

The one side how to insert battery and memory card; other side how to switch it on, how to remove lens cap, how to set dial to green mode, how half press for focus and how to press fully to take the photo. Will probably fit on an A6.

Seriously, one has approx. 6 hours to familiarize himself/herself a little with the content of the manual while waiting for the battery to charge. Sure that in that time one can get to 'basic shooting operation' on page 70, so I do not really see the need for a flyer.

k5 needs a magic lantern manual, that was the best buy i made when i had k7, a lot easier to understand

I don't own a K7, but is there that much difference with the K5?

Reading and understanding is one thing, but retaining the possiblities is another!

I said 'familiarize a little'; works for me at plenty of occasions, Specially when I can associate pictures with certain parts of the manual.

Do you, btw, really think that a quickstart flyer will contain every possibility? neh, it would no longer be a quickstart flyer.

Assuming you mean K5 not E-5, lol, then I agree whole heartedly.

As Smudge said, reading and retaining are two different things, when you have to get to page 48 before it tells you how to attach the strap, or page 70 before you get to the basics of taking a shot, it's a long way in and a long read, most of which I've already forgotten!

The anti shake issue is quite a good one to pick on for two reasons. 1) I didn't really realise you have to turn it off when on a tripod, 2) because I couldn't find it in the menus when I did briefly try looking for it.

Yes I did mean K-5! Just another Senior Moment, which, incidentally, are becoming too frequent of late!

If I had not worked with difficulty through my K100d manual years ago, I would really have struggled with the manual for my new K5. And the on--screen menus are not always clearly expressed. On the basis that the K5 has a lot in common with the K7, I decided it was worth spending £10 on a K7 Magic Lantern guide from eBay. Definitely worthwhile.
