Serial Numbers

I had a quick look into camera insurance a while ago and Gartmore's recent experience has forced me to pull my finger out and do something about it.

I remember being asked to detail serial numbers for lenses etc. No problem, but the serial number sticker has come off my kit lens. Is it recorded electronically in the background, ie, with the EXIF info?

Will it be a problem to get insurance with no serial number? I've got all of the others.

Lens serial number is not recorded in Exif.

Glover & Howe don't ask for serial numbers, or any details at all, in advance for each sub £150 item, as they are included in your "misc items" total.

Ah! The little box at the bottom of the form asks for a list of equipment including serial number.

I'll fill in the form without it and see what happens.

Yes, but with Glover & Howe, you don't have to list items that have a value of less than £150 each at all.

You just list £150+ items, then enter a total amount for "Misc items".

So you don't even have to mention your kit lens, just include the value in the Misc.

I can't speak for other insurers. Some may ask you to list everything, some nothing.

Do Glover & Howe offer discount for club members? I had very good experiences with them when I used ( and trashed ) C**** gear.

Thought it was after all of my serial numbers.

As my camera is an *istDL, what sort of figure should I be looking to insure for? If anything happened, it is unlikely I'd replace with that as it is old. Should I be looking to cost for a K10 / K20.

Not sure. If the policy is for replacement cost, then the most up to date model's price should be given i.e. K20D, otherwise I would speak to your agent. This is were knowing what the policy pays helps.

"Full replacement (New for Old) – your sum(s) insured is to represent the full replacement cost of your equipment. In the event of an item being out of production or discontinued, your sum insured must represent the replacement cost of the nearest equivalent item."

I'm not sure if that allows you to buy a second-hand replacement if you would prefer that to a new model, for example a K10D instead of a K-m.

Bear in mind that the DL was the lowest model in the range at the time, and the K10D, K20D and the K-m are officially discontinued. The current lowest model is the K-x.

Perhaps an email to G&H would clear it up. Sorry I'm not clear myself.

I did speak to them about this. I've got my K200D insured with them. If that broke, and I wanted to say buy a K7, I could get the cash amount I'd insured the K200D for, and add the extra myself.
Alternatively, I could have insured the K200D for the amount a K7 would cost, but then you're paying higher premiums....
