selections in GIMP

I use GIMP as my main photo editor, but I don't think I quite understand what you are asking?
There are 6 selection tools. They are along the top line of the main GIMP tool palette. If you are used to photo editing programs I would have thought they would be fairly familiar to you, certianly the first two will be familiar even if all you have used is MS Paint.
In order from the left, you can select a rectangular area or an eliptical one, or you can go for a freehand drawn area, an area of similar colour within a defined threshold, all areas of the same colour or a semi automatic edge following freehand selection.
If you need any of these explaining in detail, or are actually trying to ask about something quite different, please say so and I'll do my best.

I am loosing the pssibility to "select". There must be some "place" where I switch it out without noticing it myself
Possible mistakes?
I use Gimp extensively and there are a couple of conditions when selection may appear not to be working.are there anybody who uses GIMP ?

But first, which version of Gimp? They changed the selection tools completely in 2.4. If you haven't already upgraded, you should - for a more pleasant experience.
Also, is this on Linux or Windows?

Hello,
I am brandnew inthe forum and guite novice in gimp (have a book for learning: A. Peck Beginning GIMP)
I do have Gimp 2.4.5
windows XP
I know the place in the menu and in some cases everything is fine, all the selection tools work fine. Then suddenly ( I do not know what is different) the "marching ants" will not appear. And this is NOT the problem of view>show selection (ctrlT)
For example when choosing Ellipse there should appear a circle near cursor, but while the problem it is crossed by a line and it doesnt work. The other selection tools do not work either.
It must be something simple, because my husband tryed to fix it, he closed and opened different files...did whatever and miracle, it worked again.
But I still have no idea how I switched it OUT...not once! It irritates me.
May be I do not understand all the tool options? english is not my native language.
Thanks,
Aiki
