Second hand warranties

Apologies for the flood of questions, but i'm confused.

Pentax provide an excellent 2 year european warranty, but is this honoured if you buy 2nd hand from an individual?

If something goes wrong, do you send the item to Pentax or do you need to take it to the shop the first user bought it?

And do you need to provide evidence you bought the item from the first user?

Warranties are generally not transferable. If you buy second-hand, you would need to get a new warranty from the seller.

What a lot of consumers don't realise is that much of the cost of warranty repairs/replacement is actually paid by the shop, not the manufacturer (particularly shipping but there can be an excess, cost of restocking a replacement item, etc). Hence why internet retailers with their wafer-thin margins hate returns...

Thanks. So when someone lists something on ebay or on the classifieds here, saying '6 months warranty remaining', it's of no benefit?

Erring towards buying new, for my next purchase.

Flossie is quite correct, the obligation of warranty is between the retailer and the original purchaser and unless otherwise specified thats where it ends.

Certain very nice retailers will honour warranties for a second user especially if the seller and buyer are members of this forum.

Chris at SRS is the gut to talk too if you buy an item with remaining warranty from their store.

Wonderful SRS offer 1 year warranties on 2nd hand DSLRs anyway, so not an issue really (most dealers only go to 3 months!) I really meant buying from individuals.

I am thinking of buying from an individual who can supply proof of purchase (with the 2 year warranty, expires 2012 marked on receipt) but there is no way I can go back to where he purchased the item if something went wrong. Perhaps I need to check this with Pentax.

I'm sure Chris will be delighted to be called a 'gut'!

If you go to the shop with the receipt and the item surely there shouldn't be a problem.

If I buy an item with cash and less than 1 year after purchase have to take it back as defective, the seller can't argue as they are quite unlikely to remember me from the time I've bought it - if I take my recent SRS purchase back to Chris he wouldn't be able to tell me from a fictional irish drunk priest with a pendant for bricks, gurrlllz and DRINK!

Now if you buy an item and to get the 2nd year guarantee like you do with Nikon you have to register the item with Nikon UK, that might be a different matter.

Penchant perhaps?

Thanks for the advice but I was talking about buying from an individual, where I cannot get to the shop he bought it from (say in another country or far flung part of UK), but where proof of purchase is provided. I previously thought I'd be able to go to Pentax directly for repairs, but Philstaff's recent story made me think otherwise, as he had to return the item to Currys.

Presumably an item given as a gift is still covered by the warranty - so as long as you have the receipt I can't see why a secondhand item shouldn't be covered.

I believe that under EU law an item has to be fit for purpose regardless of whether it is secondhand or not - the age of the item is what matters.

Thanks Gwyn. That makes sense. And I just checked out Pentax's uk website- apparently repairs are carried out by a company called Photopia, you just download a form from the Pentax website, and send the item there
