For photos it isn't a real problem although the 40 megapixels files of the 645D can be quite large
The SDXC cards are I believe more aimed at the video market ad since most current DSLR can do video surely some would see the benefit of it.

I am using ADATA 16GB Class 10s without issue in a K20D. I previously used the ADATA 8GB Class 6s without any trouble. Got mine from www.memoryc.com at a good price.

Hi All,
I've just been working out how much SD card capacity I have for my trip to Cuba and been thinking of picking up a couple of new cards. I've always used the Sandisk Extreme III's but notice that my 4GB & 8GB cards state "class 6" but the newer ones state "class 10". To further muddy the waters my 8GB card "class 6" states 30MB/s and my 16GB "class 10" is also claiming 30MB/s...
Can anyone explain the difference? The current crop of Sandisk Extreme's that are "class 6" 20MB/s are the ones that seem made for HD video and are significantly cheaper than the "class 10" 30MB/s ones...

Cheers Stefan - how did I know that it would be you that would come to my aid 30MB/s & 20MB/s I can get my head around it was the differing class ratings for what I thought were the same product that had me questioning things. I guess I've not noticed any improvement with the 30MB/s over the old class 6...

30MB/s is quite fast and your device that use the SD card do need to support those speeds, many just don't have the capability to use it fully.
The class rating is done by the SD Association, they define it.
It's the minimum sustained write speeds for a card.
Class 6 means 6MB/s or more
Class 10 = 10MB/s or more
For a long time there was only class 2, 4 & 6 so the even the fastest cards couldn't get class 10 because it wasn't there, that's why i find the class rating not so useful though.
Also there is a new class out now, the UHS-I it's not really a new class but those card and card readers are the new and upgraded versions.
They support up to 25MB/s minimum sustain write speed maximum is near the 104MB/s.
I'm talking about the support thought the UHS-I cards doesn't need to be that fast.

I was going to start another thread, but as this one is here, I will add
Do you think that Pentax will do a firmware update for the new SDXC cards?
They did a firmware update for the Ds so that HC cards could be used, but I would find it unlikely they would do an XC firmware for the Ds. This however as even one of my 8GB cards will suffice on it, and even 32GB SDHC will be more than enough for a 6MP camera.
But, what about my K10D and K20D? The K10D is probably borderline and 32GB might be more than good enough, but the K20D? If you shoot RAW +4 star Jpeg that I do (and no asking why, I just do) then a firmware upgrade to XC will be a welcome update.
However, knowing Pentax and their updates, I may think that the K20D will conk out before any firmware is available.
But they did an HC for the Ds so maybe an XC for the K20D.
Here's hoping.
Frankly I've no need to use SDXC. The 2,100 pic shoot was an exception ( A multi event day in london ). If I need more I can just spend another £30 on a 4th 16GB card.
