Sandisk Extreme failure

In the past week I have two of these cards fail, in both cases the lock switch fell off.

That happened to one of mine a few months ago.

Strange considering I never move the switch.

easy enough to break or move the switch... if the card is even slightly tilted when inserting it into the slot or pulling it out.. it catches the switch against the camera or card reader body.... it is such a tight fit, there is no margin for mis alignment and far to easy to break....

Some card safes also catch the switch when the card is removed. The Jessops ones are very bad in this respect - the retaining lugs are in the same position as the switch and I actually saw one pull the switch out of a card.

I've only got one Sandisk, it's an Ultra II.

The lock switch has gone missing from that too!

Seems that Sandisk QC isn't up to the price they charge.

My 3 year old Kingston cards are still in one piece.

Luckily for me the 'Ultra is still useable, the switch going missing from the 'open' position, but I don't trust it!

Weird, never even thought about that happening.

I think Don and John are probably right. Unfortunately both mine broke in the locked position.

The corner by the lock switch cracked. Superglued it... and it's just about working, but I'm not using it.

Currently using two of the Samsung tough 8Gb cards. Haven't done any speed comparisons, but they certainly feel better built than the Sandisk (IIRC, they claim 1.5ton car can drive over them, and you can put them in water for up to 24hr! :shock

I was wondering if I could claim my lifetime warranty on the broken Sandisk...

I had a problem with a Sandidsk Extreme a couple of years ago and thought the same. They asked me to return the card with original receipt by recorded delivery to an address in The Czech Republic. They said they would replace it, if it was found to be defective, but if they considered the problem was down to misuse or wear and tear, then I would have to pay the return postage.
Pretty standard stuff I suppose, but the cost of postage was pretty close to the cost of getting a new card, which is what I opted to do.

Lifetime warranties are pretty useless for low cost items, when return addresses are overseas

Another vote for the Samsung cards, I have three 4Gb cards and two 8Gb cards and they have proved to be very reliable. Amazon and Play.com often have them on offer, I think I only paid £5.99 for an 8Gb card earlier this year.

That is an interesting statement with no reason stated to back it up...

Why so anti-sandisk???

my reason is simply 6 failed disks from sandisk

each and every memory card/ flash disk i ever bought from sandisk failed on me

I tried a few other brands (transcend, lexar, my flash (i think thats what its called)) and they all still work even after a few years of continuos abuse

I always buy Integral cards, been using them for years for various purposes and devices. I have never had one fail on me, therefore never saw any reason to justify the higher price of Sandisk cards.
