Samsung GX-15 announced

I wonder if Smsung will add to the bewildering array of proprietary RAW formats, or do the sensable thing and use the publicly documented DNG for its RAW files. It's about time we photographers demanded an end to all these incompatable formats, and press the camera makers to include DNG as a RAW format.

It's already used by some cameras and medium format backs.

It's fully documented, available to anyone, and has fields for all the fancy proprietary stuff that you could want. Wake up, camera makers, get over yourselves!!

Hopefully they'll carry that on

I've just checked the DPReview of the 815, and they say the RAW files are large and slow. One thing that should be emphasised is to use DNG with Huffman encoding - that's what the Adobe DNG convertor uses

If you don't use the Huffman encoding option then the DNG files are as large as Pentax's PEF files. As always, it's a tradeoff between processing speed and card-write speed. That is to say, that doing Huffman encoding takes significant processing time, but means you're doing less card writing - so one trades off the other somewhat.

I should be very surprised if this first camera produces anything other than PEF files. For the futue, who knows.

Er Mods, the user name should give a clue

The interview with Ned Bunnell featured in an earlier thread in this forum might give a clue as to what Pentax proposes to do, within Hoya's strategic context?

Samsung = Volume; Pentax = Primes plus the 'niche / boutique' market on one interpretation? On Ned Bunnell's account, that is how Pentax have situated their prime lenses in the market, and would be seeking to leverage off and capitalise on those...

My take and paraphrase - Pentax is about the good glass: most everything else is commoditised (and like all consumer items that are commoditised, subject to fierce competition predominantly on price).
