Film cameras such as the MX will work down to about -20C, but do need to be relubricated before such extremes are met.
Digital SLRs will be OK down to 0C, maybe a little lower. The new K7 is rated to operate down to -10C.
You could try keeping the camera tucked inside your coat until ready to take a picture. As batteries may be your problem, keep the batteries in a warm pocket and put them in the camera just before use. Batteries do not work as well in extremes of cold, so also use freshly charged ones.

I regularly use my K20D and K-7 in much lower temp. with no problem. I just make sure I have a freshly charge battery in the camera, and another one tucked in my pocket. I alternate the batteries regularly to keep them warm, and they just "keep on clicking".

My K10D cut out on me at about -10C in Paris last December, I believe the batteries don't perform as well at low temperatures. When I got back to my villa she warmed up and worked fine for the rest of the holiday, I was just a bit more careful to keep her warm.

Batteries are the major problem, recharge them fully and if you've two keep one in your inside pockets of your jacket to keep it warm.

I was in Porvoo taking photos in -20 Celcius and the camera wasn't even fully loaded (I forgot my recharger home). I took little over 170 photos during a time about 1,5 hours in that temp and lots more when I got back inside. Good performance I'd say. I kept the camera inside my Lowepro Nova 3 camera bag when not shooting.

You could make up a dummy battery to go into the body connected to the real thing which you could keep under your clothing. I'd recommend a fuse somewhere though.

Exactly. Batteries are the major problem, recharge them fully and if you've two keep one in your inside pockets of your jacket to keep it warm.
When one battery fails swap it for the warm one and then warm it up in turn. When it gets back up to temperature it will work again.
