Salsify

It's that time of year when the "weed" Salsify or Goat's Beard sets it's seed head. I far prefer it's more ragged and coarser appearance than that of the dandelion; last year I did a couple of focus stacks so this time I thought to try a different approach using a much shallower depth of field.

Well seen, well taken and nicely contrasting pictures. The shallow depth of field approach worked well.

And it's a good day because I've learned something new today, too - there's more to salsify than just an edible root!

The first shot makes a really good image - the soft almost misty look through the foreground reveals the centre of the seed head, all within a non-classic composition - nicely done

Lots of beautiful misty texture in here. and "non classic composition" works very well.

Lovely little set, Rob - a visually interesting subject.

Lovely set. I look forward to the September set when you lift the roots to eat .

Doesn't look like what I know as goats beard at all. That is Aruncus dioicus, and another pia in my garden, but only because it is in the wrong place, not because it's a thug.

Thanks all for your kind comments. Gwyn I defer to t’internet on plant ID, this meadow salsify is also known in the US as Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon apparently which is rather a mouthful. I know the goat’s beard you mean which is a garden plant, I have no idea how this plant got its names. I shall have to investigate it’s culinary properties, might as well get some practical use out of it as well as photographic.

Great set Rob... particularly like the first one but they all have a light and delicate touch...

Agree with Bill, the opening image has a fantastic artistic quality to it.

Brilliant shots, Rob, which have inspired me to hunt down some Goat's Beard of my own to photograph

I guess you could say, to coin, and corrupt, a phrase from the Commodores "I Feel Salsified" link
