Three from the Lakes, please excuse the oblique title of this thread, but they all contain rocks and they are all in portrait format! All on Haystacks, with the K-5iis and Pentax-M 28mm F3.5 lens.

WOW its amazing what that lens can deliver in your capable hands, I'm just getting to know mine.

I cant really add anything else other than I love them all! especially the detail and obvious Dynamic range that this combo can deliver

Was a little disappointed though not to see a washed up boxer still ready to go the distance!

Very nice set indeed, love the last two shots very atmospheric images.

This is the type of thing I wish I could achieve!

Great set of photos David. An amazing looking landscape, we certainly don't get anything like that in Hampshire.

I can see why you love that 28 3.5 so much. I've not used my Pentax-M 28mm 2.8 at all for landscapes. Always take the zooms. Mental note to carry the 28.

All very nicely composed - the upright works very well with these. This time (unlike the previous set when you ventured up to the tops) the light and drama in the clouds really add to the interest. Well done with that lone rock in the water on the 2nd - you had move around to get that no doubt using a prime lens!

I think the contrast and colours are excellent on the 1st - I wonder if the Black & White ones would benefit from a touch more contrast as well (not the sky, mainly the more distant land). In any case, I would like to see colour versions also, if poss?

Very nice set David. 2nd shot is gorgeous. Do have some reservations with the foreground on the first one. The conundrum is what to have at the edges of the frame.

On the RH side it looks like you are at the edge of the reeds/grasses, and maybe a little shift to the right would have got them all in. Of course this may not be the case. If not the case, then I would have framed slightly to the left, so it doesn't look like you've just accidentally caught the edge. If you had moved slightly left or right then you also wouldn't have dissected the rock in the water on the RH side

It is nice to see that someone such as yourself who has a decent set of lens options still enjoys on old mf jobbie and can produce this level of output

Superb shots, David. The impression of depth/distance is evident in all three, but particularly in the first, in which the change of colours from bottom to top enhances the 2D to 3D illusion for me. (Hope that makes some sense - at least I know what I mean!)

I agree about the feel of distance in the second one but the third I find confusing as to what is is foreground interest and what is middle and distance.

Thanks all for your observations. I think it's interesting that there is some surprise I still use the M28mm F3.5 when I have other lenses that could be used for landscape such as these. I do regularly use the other ones (16-45, 17-70 and 12-24) but the M28mm F3.5 gives me very different and satisfying results.

I can't comment on the M28 F2.8 Russ, but I do know the F3.5 version has a stronger reputation. I really would recommend that you give it a try, but it does take some practice to get to know the old lenses and to get the best from them.

Thanks very much Alan, you are spot on as always. The grasses in the foreground did extend a bit further to the right and most of the shots I took of this scene were in landscape format, for the very reasons you have mentioned (see image below).




Thanks Stuey, I use the M28 F3.5 because I think that it produces lovely results, very unlike the modern lenses. One of the main benefits is that it has almost no distortion, something that can't be said for the zooms and is consistently sharp across the whole frame.

Thanks Nigel, I haven't processed any colour versions of the last two yet because I particularly wanted to do BW ones of these, for some reason my eye just saw them this way. I might have a go with colour ones, if so I'll post them for you.

Nice images (as always)

Excellent David, processing looks different to the portrait version. Prefer the processing on the landscape version, except for the sky. I prefer the sky in the portrait.
