I've used a 4 year old one purchased for an Optio [sic] camera.
It works fine.
Needs to be fairly accurately pointed at the camera, and thus often in shot, esp. on a wide angle shot!
Note that there are 2 models available for sale: one has additional features for zoom control: no good for the *istD, so get the cheaper model if available. I think it's about £20 in the UK

The wireless remote has quite a limited range. As an alternative, you can use wires, and considerably extend the effective range.

I´ve seen that there is an infra-red remote control fro the *istD
I just wanted to know if anyone had used one and what they were like...
- effective distance
- rough cost
- etc (all the usual questions)

Well, my experience is that the pentax remote control works fine up to 18 - 20 feet away. But you have to be in front of the camera.Howdy

I got a spare new one. If you are interested I could send you it to you for £15 incl. shipping costs from Germany. Just drop me a note.
