How does the unit connect to the K20D? From the manual it appears it plugs into the 2.5 jack socket and then uses its own infrared link or wire between the transmitter and receiver, or optionally triggering the camera's own infrared input directly if the switch is appropriately set. Is it in the wired or wireless mode that you having problems? I have used a a cheap universal IR and homemade wired release on my K20D without a problem, other than having to set the transmitter to P for Pentax, rather than N or C, and remembering to set the shutter mode on the camera to remote trigger. If its is any help here is the wiring for the 2.5mm jack:

First of, and sorry if this sounds to obvious and stupid but did you install the correct battery (23A type battery (12V))and is the polarity right?
Is the battery full? Even a new battery can be in rare cases empty (just had a whole box of Duracell Plus from MACRO. Every battery in the box was empty. Some problem when the battery was manufactured. Got 3 boxes in exchange from Duracell).
Is the battery sitting securely and correctly with both the + and - poles having good connection?
No visible damage to any of the contacts?
Is the camera set to remote control drive mode?
If this is all OK check if there is a signal coming from the Remote. The best way to do this is hold the remote against any video camera and press the remote. In the monitor window of the video camera you should see the IR light coming on. If this is not then there may be a broken contact somewhere.
As you say that the problem is with the cable as well chances are that it is the trigger button itself of the components that go to the trigger button (maybe the contact under the button are corroded for some reason or do not make contact?)
Next would be to make sure that the settings on the remote are correct. You will have to use:

If this is all done you should be up and running or you should at least know where the problem is and have narrowed it down.

Thanks a bunch all of you;
I'm afraid the problem is that I am a class one plonker!
I now realize that the camera was set to switch itself off after a very short lapse of not use.
All I gotta do now is to figure how to set it to stay ON!

I bought a remote firing gizmo about a year or so back but only now giving it a try.
It's a 'wired & wirelessTwin 1R3-UT' It only fires my K20D remotely when it feels like it, so, I bought & installed a new battery, still no joy.
there is a little slide switch on one side, I've tried that in both positions;on the underside, another slide switch, 3 positions, tried all combinations; same outcome.
Any ideas, please?
