Hi guys can you take a look at the above photos taken with my kr camera Im not convinced of the IQ, What I meen by this is the photos seem to need more sharpening than Im used to doing with my K10 and K100 D, They just seem soft to me the first photo has been sharpend at over 100 percent to show the detall.

I do more sharpening with my K-5 than I did with the K10D.

Have you checked the lens using the focus adjustment?

Hi Mike thanks for the feed back I have tried different lenses on the camera but all the images just seem soft.

The K-r itself has no image quality problems, unless of course it's faulty in some way.

The only way you can compare is to shoot a detailed subject with the camera on a tripod.

As regards sharpening, different sensors will need slightly different aharpening. It also depends on subject and the tastes of the photographer. However, a picture should look sharp beyond any doubt once you've finished with it. If this isn't the case then something is amiss.

Try adding +1 sharpness to in-camera JPEG shooting to see if that puts it right.

I think the output from CMOS sensors tends to look softer than that from CCD sensors "straight from the camera" so I'm not surprised it doesn't compare that well to the K10 and K100. As JR says, you'll just have to start using a bit more software sharpening to bring the detail out.

Unfortunately I doubt we'll ever see CCD sensors in "consumer" level cameras again - it's the price we've paid for high ISO performance.

By the time you've resized a shot for the web, it'll need sharpening anyway... the 'resizing' resamples the whole image. Better to compare 1:1 crops.

have you double checked the basics? Diopter adjustmen, sr settings etc?
I had a comercial soot looking all wrong then realized When teaching Gerri some of the new features in Aperture 3 I had somehow accidentally set aperture to treat j-pegs as masters instead of raw.... changed that setting back, re-processed my RAW images and they were fine!

I am finding that there is some inconsistency in the shots that I am getting from the KR, I have found that I am getting much better (sharper results) using a tripod than hand held.
As I said in a previous post this camera has to be "worked" IMO, compared to my K200D,perhaps it is the nature of the CMOS sensor.
Having said all that, it is capable of producing fantastic images.

Just a thought I did have a Samsung gx 20 for a year or so and I think it has a cmos sensor but I did not notice any softness in the j pegs from that camera.

If I remember rightly (and I'm happy to stand corrected) from the reviews at the time, Samsung used a higher default sharpening level in the GX20 than Pentax did in the K20D. This was one of the reasons the Samsung was hailed as being more user friendly for those who didn't want to do their own PP.

As I only shoot raw files (and haven't owned either camera) it's something I didn't pay too much attention to at the time.

I was wondering about this as well, I've only recently noticed I do much more sharpening with my K5 than with my K20D, and the K5 seems to be able to take much more sharpening as well before looking overcooked.

I remember reading some speculation about a weaker AA filter on the K5 (and the Kr too?), perhaps it wasn't just an urban myth.
