Really why does Pentax not have an EVIL camera?

But that is what I am saying really. Pentax already HAS a lineup of very small very practical excellent quality lenses for decent prices that would suit the size of a smaller format camera whatever you want to call it.

What I am trying to convey is that Pentax already has the advantage over Nikon/Sony/Canon in the fact that they already make feature packed smallish DSLRs and have a great lineup of small lenses. They could use that advantage to push a smaller form of camera.
When you keep using the K-mount the register distance and things like that will need to be kept the same so you actually don't gain much in size.
The Kx is already very small, so imaging that without a viewfinder and you've your camera.
Not worth it in my opnion, i rather have a optical viewfinder then.

say you take this camera, and forget about size factors... just imagine the reduced cost after you dump the mirror and pentraprism, possibly even the shutter... and you then add (on top of a couple new lenses like the Q has with built in shutter, and nd filters....) 10 or more frames per second frame rates, multiple video options, fast af during video capture, flash synch at all shutter speeds(with appropriate shutter in lens lenses) , and image quality and dynamic range equal to the k5 but at a cost equal to the kr... many people WOULD give up the optical finder for that...
I'd buy a kr sized evil cam IF it had enhanced video abilities and accepted by k lenses... I'd even buy a couple new lenses if they had built in leaf shutters....
show me a pentax kmount evil that can record video for two hours straight to memory card and I will buy two, at the end of next years wedding season.
otherwise, I'll likely be buying two sony nex vg10 or vg20 video cams and a novoflex nex to pk adaptor..
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Don not again

First off what's the price of an optical viewfinder like the one in the Kr and how much cost een decent to good EVF?
You say it's cheaper but i've no idea what numbers we are talking about.

Also the things you're talking about, all those options can also work with a DSLR.
Because it has a shutter and a mirror doesn't mean you have to use them

As for the video, you know they don't 2 hours because of the TAX.
There is a lower Import Tax on photo cameras then on video cameras you know.

I can see you've not actually had a NEX in your hands

Kr : 125mm(w) x 97mm(H) x 68mm(L) (excluding protrusions)

Width is almost the same, height is from the optical viewfinder if that one is gone it's not that much larger like i said.
And the length is the register distance if you want to use K-mount on the camera that we are talking about you will need to keep that length or else the lenses won't work.

There is no comparison Stefan. I went from the Pentax shop and the Kr straight to the Sony shop and the N5 - it feels much smaller (and lighter).

Edit. should mention that I tried the Zeiss 85/1.4 (PK with adapter). It's smaller, no question.

I don't think that applies globally...
as for cost... companies selling large amount of products...even a fraction of a cent adds up... so yeah... evf's must be cheaper than optical glass.... then there are manufacturing tolerances, which I'm sure the less complicated design will be easier to manufacture therefore cheaper...

That change things but even so it doesn't make a huge differnce, we are talking about mm's here so what will you gain?
Better to use a differnt register as well or make it even smaller.

Btw, i was talking about the Kx and not the Kr, the Kx is smaller then the Kr you know
Kx is:
122.5mm(w) x 91.5mm(h) x 67.5mm(l)

Kx is:
122.5mm(w) x 91.5mm(h) x 67.5mm(l)
Well the Kx is a discontinued camera and not on the same level (and therefore as good a comparison as the Kr) as the NEX 5N.

This will give you a good idea of just how small the 5 (and 5N) are : link

The EU and USA so far as i know and maybe more, when the make a differnce between video camera and photo camera then there is a rule about this most likely.
So the market is big enough not to do it.

But how much cheaper is it?

200 bucks or more?

The camera with the EVF will be
- smaller
- lighter
- cheaper
- no mirror black out

Camera with OVF
- more power efficient (OVF doesn't cost power)
- phase AF (contrast AF can't do tracking)
- no viewfinder lag

Sensor in the Kx and the Kr are almost the same and so are the photos they create.
As for the fact that it's discontinued, doesn't change a thing to the discusion.

I only said that the KX without a viewfinder will be almost just as larger as a K-mount camera with an EVF, you haven't proof me wrong so far...

Again - you haven't actually had a NEX in your hands so what are trying to say - that you can 'see' there is no difference by viewing images on the internet ?

I guess you didn't bother to go to the link I posted above then ? Size-wise there is still a huge difference (even over a discontinued camera you continue to promote) ! Try pushing a Kr / Kx into your jacket pocket, it's not even remotely an issue with the NEX line of cameras.

Kx : Dimensions: 122.5 x 91.5 x 67.5 mm ; Weight: 515 grams

The NEX 5N (286g) is smaller than the Kx by :

Width : 10 %
Height : 35 %
Length : 44 %
Weight : 45 %

Need visual proof ? Here's the NEX 5 compared to a Samsung NX10 (smaller than the Kx) : link

Looks like that proves you wrong

No haven't tried the NEX the only one that interest me is the NEX7 because of the many controls but it's too expensive i have hold the olympus though.
And yes i've seen the link and the NEX is small but a NEX with a k-mount lens isn't small though
If the Nex with DA40 limited can fit in your pocket then so can a Kx or Kr.

And no it doesn't prove me wrong, you are talking about a NEX not an K-mount camera with an EVF where this topic is about and i talked about.
Yes the height will maybe be 35% smaller and the weight maybe 200 grams less for such camera... unless they put SR in it then of course i doubt there will be much weight differnce.
The Width and the Length will be so good as the same because of the k-mount and your hands.

So where does that prove me wrong?

Kevin, or i miss the point you're trying to make or you are.

The NEX is wonderful sample on how small APS-C camera can be but you need to use a lens mount specially designed for it to gain those small sizes.

vrapan was suggesting a camera like the nex but designed with a K mount and with that comes also the register distance (mount to sensor) that need to be the same or else the lenses won't work on it and that was the whole point.
So the only real reduction that you have is the viewfinder that can go away but that is not the biggest gain with such systems, it's the length of the camera that can be much smaller.
44% as you showed.

And that's not the way to do it i believe.
Something like the NEX with an good adapter to K is the way to go but i doubt we will see that.

I mean Pentax has the q-mount, k-mount and the 645 mount to worry about now and that for such small company, a fourth is too much.
