Re-sizing images

Of course! I can be so slow sometimes

The only things I run in 'Parallels' is faststone viewer (I love this app).
TimePanic (something I've become wedded to) and Freehand (because I don't want to buy a new version)

Parallels is absolutely seemless - you can set it so Windows takes over your Mac or set it so it runs invisibly in the Mac OS. Copy and paste between OS's as normal.

Looking at the System Information, under 'Memory/Drive Status', the the Available Paging Memory and the Total Paging Memory are both set at 4 MB.
4MB? If it does say that, rather than 4Gb, then that's your problem!

I wish it was that simple, Dan. Unfortunately that was a typo.

Have subsequently tried to search for how to reset preferences in PSP to no avail. Can only find changing Downloading Photos Preferences.

Greynolds - could you check your version of PSP to see what the Paging memory is set at.

However, I'm not sure this is the problem as I managed to change the Paging File Size in Windows to over 4 GB but this didn't seem to make any difference.

My last computer was running Vista, but then I've had the same problem using my daughter's which has XP. So I don't think it's that.

If anyone can come up with other suggestions that'd be great, but I fear it's defeated us all.

Also not to be pedantic (ok, maybe it is pedantic ), but you could run PSP on a Mac, either natively in Windows+Boot Camp or virtualised in VMWare or Parallels (to name but a couple of the options).
Yeah a guy at the Apple Store mentioned the Boot Camp, but in the end I didn't want the hassle of having to buy Windows XP and install it. Thought it would be simpler just to go for a PC and save myself £300. Also, I wasn't keen on the built in battery. Probably fine in the UK, but it might not be so simple if something went wrong out here.

Have you tried running PSP in WinXP compatibility mode as I suggested previously?

Was just doing a little idle Googling ... is there any chance you have a high number in the 'levels of undo' or 'undo storage' setting in PSP's preferences?

Check with Microsoft for compatibility issues I had similar problems, it was down to the graphics card driver, also check the manufacturers graphic card website for updated drivers.

Best thing to begin is to ensure you process all the updates to PSP and Windows. If that doesn't work then try unistalling and reinstalling. I know it's a pain but it could work.

I was just about to say uninstall PSP and reinstall PSP, but greynolds beat me to it.

As regard to page file size, you should let the OS auto set it for you. In the past I had to manually set the pagefile as windows could not cope (in the period of 3.11, NT and Win95/9 as windows could not cope with memory upgrades. Of course these were the days of 16/32/64MB RAM (imagine that - 64MB RAM was the dogs whatever with NT! and to have the PC at work upgrade to 64MB was a big thing.......LOL)
Nowadays, certainly from XP onwards, windows is more efficient and can adjust the page file dynamically.

Now, and I know this may be a silly question, but what is the file system on your PC? It should be NTFS. However I have come across (certainly in XP) file systems being FAT32 on the main hard drive (your c: drive) Not only is this wrong, but inefficient. It should be NTFS being Vista, but you never know.

Thought I'd update everyone re. my PSP re-sizing issue. It's still there unfortunately. I'm current with Windows/PSP updates. So I tried re-installing, though didn't think this would do the trick as I've loaded it on three computers now and all have had the same problem. It didn't! In the end I gave up and loaded a copy of Elements that I'd got free with a Wacom tablet a while back. This re-sized images no problem. So will now investigate Elements' other features. If I still prefer PSP, I guess I can just use Elements for re-sizing.

So problem (kind of) solved. Now I have to work out why my images are deteriorated so much by the process of downsizing(don't recall that happening much with my old computer). But best leave this for another thread...

Thanks for all the help folks.

Point 3 on this blog post might be a useful start?

Brilliant Dan. I can see that makes a real difference. No need for that other thread now.

Right, now to re-post my fortnightly comp entry...

Just bear in mind that this is a fairly basic method of sharpening, but it's as effective as I want it to be. You need to have a play with different values in the Amount, Radius and Threshold parameters to get the look that suits you, especially on the last sharpen, as this can be all too easy to over-sharpen.

There are various websites with plenty of more in-depth methods of sharpening, but this is, I think, a decent basic option.
