RAW button on K20D

couldn't find reference to this (except on the K20D manual, but then it sounds a bit obscure):

- I usually shoot in RAW
- occasionally, I'd like to shoot several photos in JPEG.

Now, as for the latter, I thought that if I go to Menu>RecMode>RAW button, untick "cancel each time" + highlight JPEG>RAW + press OK twice, the camera would be ready to shoot JPEG when I turn it on, and if I want to shoot RAW, I just need to press the RAW button. Once I've shot, the camera is ready to shoot JPEG again.

Have I got it completely wrong? Whatever I do in Menu>RAW button, the camera is always on RAW anyway...pressing the RAW button does allow me to shoot JPEG, but then I'd like it to be possible to other way around as well...

it looks like it's working now...just that the camera - as I turn it on - it's always in RAW. If I click the RAW button, it switches to JPEG, and it remains that way till I click the RAW again.

I guess there's no way to have it ready on JPEG as I turn it on?

maybe, there is an option memory in the first or second menu, it's about what the camera's remember when turning it off, it could be one of the options.

I don't have a K20D so can't look for you.

Good suggestion but can't find anything of the sort. Is there something like that in the K10D?

With the GX20, you set the start-up format (raw, raw+ or JPEG) with Menu>Capture Menu 1>File Format. This gives the option of raw, raw+JPEG or JPEG on start-up. If you go to Capture Menu 1>Set Raw Button, you have the option of assigning the raw button to switch from your start-up setting to any of the others. It looks like the menu structure is different on the K20D, but you certainly should have the choice somewhere of which format you use when the camera is switched on.

Best of luck

You can set File Format in the menu to RAW, RAW+ or JPEG. That's the only way to have it ready on your chosen mode as you turn the camera on.

Whatever you do with the RAW button, the camera will default to whatever File Format you chose when the camera is turned off and on, or when you press the Review button.

First set the file format to JPEG and select your quality level. I use Premium quality JPEG. This is then the normal format for your camera.

The RAW button can be set to shoot RAW or RAW+JPEG either one only per press, or until pressed again.

All these functions are in the menus and are fully explained in the instruction book. See Setting the File Format, pages 156-159.

Thanks everyone. Now happily using JPEG on start-up. For some reason I missed out that option. Good learning experience.

That's the annoying part.

Yes, I'm amazed that the Pentax designers didn't find it annoying enough to change for the K-7. They do use the cameras themselves on a regular basis, don't they? Sometimes I wonder.
