K-m (k2000) or K200D - same price

Nice dilemma
The K200D has the advantage of weather and dust sealing but I think you will find that the K-m is faster focussing. The K-m will feel more entry level than the K200D. The menu system of the K-m will be geared slightly more to the new D-SLR user.
Perhaps some K200D users could chip in
Edit: Much as I think the K-m is a great little camera I think I would go for the K200D as I'm a bit of a sucker for build and weather sealing

The K200D comes with a better lens - the optics have been upgraded and there is a metal lens mount. The difference is marginal though. The body is also weather sealed. It is possibly slightly easier to use with older non-A lenses, thanks to the green button (can be assigned to Tv shift in Manual mode). There are focus point lights displayed in the viewfinder, which the Km does not have.
The Km has a faster continuous shooting rate, but I would say that is the only clear advantage over it's slightly larger brother.
The difference between the km and K200D are not exactly like night and day, and there are pluses and minuses to both cameras, but if you don't mind the extra size, and speed isn't your main priority, I think it's worth going for the K200D.
*edit - K200D also has an LCD display on top, which is quite useful sometimes, and optical DOF preview, which I wouldn't be without.

The optics are the same, if we're talking about the L and II versions.
As for the cameras, I would go for the K200 (or second-hand K10D or K20D) to get the LCD top panel and more auto-focus points, but you should handle the cameras if you can to judge their ergonomics. That's as important as anything.

I beg your pardon - you are right. I had heard the L version was based on the old kit lens. Still has a cheap plastic mount though!

It's a lightened and cheapened version of the mark II. I bought one myself since it only costs £25 and I'm a fan of lightweight things. I also have a WR version for bad weather.

I miss the quickshift with the L lenses
I would go for the K200D too.
With the K200D you get.
- 11 focus points vs 3
- weather sealing
- focus point that lights up in the viewfinder, KM does not have that.
- there is a grip for the K200D not for the KM
- top screen, sucks less power then using the big screen on the back.

That all sounds like the k200 is the main opinion then!
If I'm honest, that was not what I was expecting but that's not a bad surprise.
The 'new' camera will be for a recently-retired relative and so does not take to technology massively quickly; and has never had an SLR. Although the k200 seems like the slightly better camera, would he be better with the k-m or will he take to them both equally as badly
My k-m is so new that I could get away with giving that to him and keeping the k200 for myself....if that will be the most suitable for the both of us.
Thanks for all the thoughts!

Surpised nobody mentioned the lack of a top LCD screen on the K-m. I find it really useful on the K200.
If it were my money, I'd consider passing on the K-m and getting a new(or nearly new) K20.

You could do that
There is very little between the K-M and the K200D but for the same price the K200D offers you a bit more.
With software though the K-M is a bit better, I believe you've some features there K200D does not have so it's up to you what is more important.

The Km isn't difficult to use with manual lenses. Just put it in manual mode, set aperture, then press the "+/-" button to have it stop down and take a reading. I tend to use mine in Av mode with these lenses, shooting wide open isn't much of a problem as I'm generally focussing around infinity for landscapes or distant subjects.
Obviously you need to set the menu option to allow the use of lenses with aperture not set to "A", and turn AF off.

The decision has been made!
Thanks everyone for your input.
I picked up the K200 today. I'm not sure who is going to end up owning it but we will leave that for a discussion at Christmas!
Thanks again.

Congratulations. You'll have an interesting Christmas. Which is more than can be said for some of us

Due to a strange stock situation at my local store, I can have either the K200d or the k-m for the same price. Both come with their respective standard pentax lens.
This all started when I was looking to buy myself a DA 55-300 for my k-m and I was asked to also buy a k-m for a relative. He is an absolute DSLR beginner so I personally think he will be better off with the k-m ??
However, i am no longer a beginner so could perhaps buy the k200 and do a trade so i have 'room for expansion'??
Is there an easy answer to this one?
I read something about different lenses available for these cameras, is this due to different attachments and is one therefore better than the other for this reason??
I would really appreciate some thoughts on this one
Thanks
