RAW batch processing in camera, post shoot

Shot some fireworks last night, changed to RAW-only, part way through. Got home to show a few through the HDD recorder, which accepts SDHC cards and does jpeg slideshows, none to be seen, Doh! Anyway, I found the K-5 will process the RAW in batches. From the playback button there is a RAW processing option and you can select the images you want. It is pretty fast.

I guess shooting RAW without writing a JPEG I'm saving a little write time to the SDHC card so hopefully can pack in a few more frames per second.

I'm not sure about that. I think because RAW files are larger and there is a limited buffer size that it would be slightly slower?

But I will stand to be corrected.

I was thinking there is an overhead for processing a Jpeg from the RAW sensor output and then there is an overhead in writing the jpeg to the card. The RAW will always be the same.

I'm thinking RAW+ vs RAW, I'd not be so sure about RAW vs JPEG.

I shoot RAW only, (on a K7), and I have tried numerous bursts and 5 bracketed shots on a number of occasions, and to me it seems that the camera fires off the shots rapidly with no delays for the first 5 or so shots, then it stops and writes them to the card.

This is the same for different settings, such as noise reduction, distortion correction etc. It feels as if the camera is leaving the processing of these things until it writes to the card, and so it doesn't seem to make any difference to the initial speed of the burst of shots - the only thing affecting this that I notice is the shutter speed of course.

I don't use RAW + Jpeg but my guess would be that the camera would treat the JPEG as just an additional processing parameter, and so delay it and carry out this at the time that the images are written to the card.
