Nice way of putting it. I think sometimes you do have to know that the resulting photograph happened 'on purpose' and wasn't a sort of lucky fluke. I can think of one or two photographs which are impressive if they are deliberate and not all impressive if they are just a cock up!

Taken in isolation there are shots by HCB for example which aren't killer good but within the whole collection they work.

I like it, a lot. It has a melancholy to it.
I like the subtle colours, the lines the curves, all that, but most of all I like the feeling it gives off.

Bear in mind I look at any shot of a bird and think oh it's a bird.

I think it's all down to taste.

I can look at a bird shot and think flip that's well exposed, sharp and well framed but I still won't like it, I'll just respect it.

There are a ton of shots where I just don't understand the composition at all but I can sort of see they are good but I can't see why the choices made make it good. There's one by Lilly (from this forum) but on her Flickr site and she cropped the edge of the teacup handle off which to me is a no-no. When I asked she said it was quite deliberate and made the composition work. Didn't explain how though

Come to that what about that famous shot of the coffee cup in the desert advertising a coffee house. I have never managed to understand why that's so good. Edward Weston hot coffee 1937, I expect Google will turn it up.

I must say that i-Berg's modification does not suit my tastes. It is too harsh, and the desolate feeling somewhat disappears...
Best regards

Is it another abstract nail in the coffin of mediocre pentax pictorialism?
Lurking is shirking.!
