Rainbow at the lighthouse

Had a bit of luck yesterday..as the weather was pretty good I drove to Penmon Point on Anglesey hoping to get another couple of shots, a favourite spot of mine..a small rain shower passed over the lighthouse & left a nice little rainbow behind, here's the shot all C&C appreciated

I like it a lot. Very sharp and great colour. I don't usually get good rainbows.

My usual question; what gear, setting, and any PP?

I like the injection of colour from that rainbow a lot.

I'm coming over to that part of the world next week, might be a long shot but can you recommend any places I have a good chance of getting photos of seals or dolphins?

Shot it with my GX10 (K10D) + Sigma 17-70 lens, I did originally intend to use my new Sigma 10-20 but it's too wide & leaves the lighthouse looking too small...


Settings were:

53mm, F11, 1/400sec (I wanted to freeze the waves)

PP - very little, usual RAW conversion + some added Local Contrast Enhancement..... no saturation etc as I used a polariser to slightly boost the sky

Hi Richard,

Funnily enough last time I was at Penmon there were 2 porpoise swimming around for over 1hr just beyond the lighthouse. Must admit though I've not seen them very often. I think Cardigan Bay, a little down the coastline, is a much more common place to have sightings

I've always been afraid to use my trusty PL filters with rainbows, but you've "shown me the light".

Thats a cracker Simon, I'd have been well pleased with that.

My only gripe is the horizon is too central, a lower viewpoint would have helped but I suppose when faced with a chance like this you just go for it without thinking.....I probably would have

The lighthouse looks a bit "Short" especially when compared to its reflection, have you changed the perspective?

I thought about the horizon when taking the shot but decided, for me anyway, that the near central position in this case didn't matter much...the important thing for me was to try & fill the frame with the lighthouse whilst making sure I didn't clip the reflection. If I had gone with the "rule of thirds" with the horizon I don't think the shots would have had quite the impact I wanted from it.

TBH, not too sure what you mean by the lighthouse looking short...it was shot from a low perspective (sitting down) so that I could get the reflection in the rockpool...I haven't adjusted the perspective in PP though

[edit] Just checked the vertical perspective in PTlens, looks spot on...probably just a "trick of the light"
