quickshift do i need it

Quick shift is a feature that can be very useful, but we have lived without it previously so it's not essential.
After AF has locked on, if you keep the half pressure on the shutter release you can tweak the point of focus using the manual focus ring. This can be especially useful for close up and macro shots.
However, you should already have this feature and you don't seem to be aware of it, so it may not be as important to your own style of photography.

thanks for the clear explination. I dont think i do currently use it. My kids swim in competative swimming galas so i usually do the following.
Have my gx 10 set on continual focus and, focus and hold the af button half way down, and pan as they race a length. I am waiting for them to breath which they do once or twice a length, i then release the shutter to get a shot, i dont think i would have the time to adjust the camera focus. I just accept that many pics will be of water and no or part of a swimmer, or out of focus.
However a couple of cracking pictures of them swimming flat out are always worth it.
Do i assume then that the dal focus speed is the same as the da, is the lack of hood and the plastic mount the only differance?

The DA-L is exactly the same as the DA but with plastic mount, no Quick shift and no lens hood. Optically and speed wise they should be the same.
As regards technique, try releasing the shutter just before the point you want - there is a lag for your response time and the release of the shutter (the latter about 90ms I would think) - and with practice you should improve your timing of the action.

I currently have the 18 - 55 and 50 to 200.
Both lenses are the samsung DA versions that both come with lens hoods.
Do i have quick shift with theese and what will it do for me.?
I am looking to get the pentax 55 to 300, but need to choose between the dal and da versions, please help.
Most of my photos are of my kids especiaaly swimming, where a bit more zoom from the poolside would be very usefall.
