Anyone could be a professional photographer..... just look at
the standard in mini-studios such as D&P shops and dept. stores.
Some of the 100mm macro lenses that they used were on ebay a while
back.... the apertures had all been glued in position at f/8
The professional photographer couldn't be trusted to change them
Wedding photography is purely a craft which can be taught to
anyone. A lot of the studios that had their own LAB attached
used to train the printers to photograph weddings on a Saturday.
It's all just a case of being commercially minded. You don't
need to be an artist and no one will pay for artistry.
If a wine importer wants a picture of his wine bottles
as long as he can read the labels, he will be happy
and pay up
Nearly all top pros are first and foremost good at
marketing or the have the brains to employ someone
who is.

Artist do it this way off course but i wonder how many can make a living out of that...Now if someone wanted to buy a photo I had taken for my own pleasure it would be a different matter - but that is not what most professionals do.
I'm actually still thinking of getting a 4x5 camera and learn the craft of making "real" photos.
Maybe go even a bit further and try to make daguerreotype photos.

Whenever I have sold one of my images to the press I always wonder why that one???
The image that is technically & compositionally the best in a set never seems to get chosen by picture desks. Yet the one I think least off will...

Sometimes I get my seven yr old to be my art director. He seems to know good art from bad art better than me...Whenever I have sold one of my images to the press I always wonder why that one???

There's a very arty farty photographer on ebay (somewhere)
who does really creative pictures of what he's selling using
probably medium format digital. He only shows a small part
of the item he's selling and a lot of it is in strong shadow.
The artwork is usually sepia toned...... will it help sell
his ebay gear....
NO CHANCE YOU CAN'T SEE WHAT YOUR BUYING!

The main criteria for professional include the following:
1. Expert and specialized knowledge in field which one is practicing professionally.
2. Excellent manual/practical and literary skills in relation to profession.

6. Participating for gain or livelihood in an activity or field of endeavor often engaged in by amateurs b : having a particular profession as a permanent career c : engaged in by persons receiving financial return
7. Appropriate treatment of relationships with colleagues. Special respect should be demonstrated to special people and interns. An example must be set to perpetuate the attitude of one's business without doing it harm.
8. A professional is an expert who is master in a specific field.

It seems nobody wants to name names!
Maybe the concept should be split into two parts: 1) Being a professional in the sense that a living is earned by photography and 2) Acting professionally within that profession. The two don't always go together.

Ah, but that is a different list. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you've chosen the five photographers whose images you like? That could be very different from a list of those who aren't currently but could be professionals. :

Fair enough, so what do the photographers on the list think? Do you think you could be professional photographers? Do you want to be?

If you are working on a commission you have to produce, in a short time period and under any circumstances, something the commissioner wants and is willing to pay a lot for, whether the commissioner is a bride or National Geographic. If you don't you won't make enough to live from photography.
I don't want that pressure.
Now if someone wanted to buy a photo I had taken for my own pleasure it would be a different matter - but that is not what most professionals do.
