Problem with this item teleconverter

Posted 11/12/2013 - 14:25 Link
I bought this teleconverter from ebay but I can't seem to get it to work properly. I am using it with a 50mm f2.8 Pentax-A manual focus lens but when I use the teleconverter I lose he ability to set the aperture via the camera and also cannot shoot with automatic exposure. Without the converter the lens works perfectly. Is there something I need to do to get the converter to work or is it broken?

Sounds like a contactor problem.
1 Clean contacts both ends of Convertor, camera and lens.

If that does not solve the problem, try using the convertor in combination with another lens. If that works then there is a contact problem between the convertor and 50mm lens, if not then the problem is likely with the convertor.

It's probably not getting an earth return. If you scrape of some of the black anodising as in the picture below it should make it work.

This is the lens I am using and it doesn't have the crescent of electrical contacts on it. But it does work automatically apart from focusing.

Check how that contact at about 120 degrees round from the top lines up and see if it corresponds to the section on my converter that I scraped off.

@daydream jay
the photo before yours is of the teleconverter rather than the actual lens

Yes, the bottom of the converter, not the lens! (My converter would appear to be the same make/model as yours.)

That's the same single contact that I have on my 50mm f1.7 so no reason why it shouldn't work. I've just tested the combo on my 5iis and it's fine. Looks like a good clean of the contacts is in order.

It isn't the lens that has the problem (if you read OP's original post he states the lens normally works OK without the TC) it is the converter itself.

I have cleaned the contacts and still nothing.

The F on the LCD display on my camera just has - - next to it.

I tried it with my 50mm FA 1.4 lens too with the same result.

It seems to be a similar porblem to several 'PKA' extension tubes where the earth return is not being made.
Looking at the e-bay link it looks like the bottom of the TC is anodised so scratching the base of the TC as per JAK's photo should do the trick.

If this doesn't work it might be that there isn't a return conection between the ends of the TC or that one of the other contacts/wire has broken. Try checking each in turn with a multimeter. There should be very little resistance (no more than a few ohms) between coresponding contacts on front & back faces. My money's on the scratching.

The lens itself doesn't have the cresent of contacts but does have the only one used for a 50mm. Many lenses only have a few of the contacts, which ones varies based on the focal length.

Not sure how to say this differently. Yes you are correct, the lens isn't getting an electrical connection through the teleconverter. You have already stated that the lens works fine so cleaning those contacts won't help. But one of those contacts, the earth return is being blocked by the black paint on the converter. The ONLY solution is to do as suggested above, and yes, scraping that anodising off the converter allowed mine to connect and resolve the same problem you are experiencing.
If you try an internet search you will find others who have provided this solution in the past and why I made this drastic (not really) modification to mine.
Why did you ignore the suggested solution given yesterday?

Crikey it's like being told off by my teacher John haha.

The reason I didn't want to start scratching stuff off is because then I wouldn't be able to send it back should that method not work...

I hope this is an acceptable reason John...

I was just getting frustrated that you seemed to be ignoring this. I obtained mine in a package with a camera and some lenses so had nothing to loose. I too was sceptical but it worked. It is a Vivitar converter, the same model as yours.
The only other 'solution' would seem to be to return it for a refund. You did pay quite a bit for it so I can see your reluctance to doctor it. If you send it back I'm sure you'll find another one quite a bit cheaper. In fact I'll even consider selling my one if it helps and it won't cost anywhere near what you paid for that one.

Yes, I now realise I paid a lot for it - I thought it was cheap at first!

Yesterday I ordered this one: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/product/vivitar-automatic-teleconverter-2x-22-hd_10...

I'll see if it works any better and then return the other if it does.

First impression was that it wasn't dead sharp, the photo below shows that it's a little soft or am I being unrealistic expecting it to be any sharper?
