Yesterday I ordered this one: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/product/vivitar-automatic-teleconverter-2x-22-hd_10...

I'll see if it works any better and then return the other if it does.

First impression was that it wasn't dead sharp, the photo below shows that it's a little soft or am I being unrealistic expecting it to be any sharper?
That converter will have the same problem; note the base is anodised same as the other one.

Sometimes you are better off not using a converter and cropping.

What aperture and lens did you use for the fly? There's more than one reason why it may not be sharp (the converter could be one of them!)

John, aperture was f8 and it was the 50mm f2.8 Macro lens - the older manual focus one that's supposed to be very sharp.

That image will take some sharpening with the 'unsharp mask' such as in Photoshop Elements. If you used the converter you will find it will reduce the optical quality of the lens and will have doubled the focal length making the depth of field is very narrow. Closing further to f11 will increase that (but go too far and diffraction reduces sharpness.)
Teleconverters generally work best with longer telephoto lenses to get some extra reach.

I had exactly the same problems with my extension tubes. They also had the anodizing on the bottom ring. I fitted them in to my lathe and very gently cut the anodizing off. Now everything works fine.
I just don't know how the manufacturers can be so stupid and anodize the bottom ring.

Regards, Horst
