Mr pants - they were simply hypotheses. If there is another explanation, please enlighten us.

Another explanation for what? Comment Image
There's nothing to explain. As said your posts speak about yourself not others.

p.s A hypothesis usually needs some kind of rationale to support it. In this area you have none.

Now that is twaddle even by your standards. What were we discussing? Profanity. Remember?

I know of several fora with "members only" areas.

On the English language ones, it's to enable "gentlemen" to discuss without profanity being an issue and "glamour" is also not a problem.

On the German one, it's because it's a real club with fee-paying members and they get something for their money.

"by application only" and after a while of being on the board are common entry requirements.

If you're going to have a forum that allows 'profanity' and glamour then why hide it in a members only area though? All it takes is for someone to sign up to see it anyway?

Well if peeps are paying for a service than it's only fair that it's something that can't be accessed for free.

no, because in this case the application is required - there are some things I don't need to see ("what has been seen cannot be un-seen"), therefore I've not applied to either.

When I first started reading this I thought Nah! we dont need a private members area, but reading through this topic I think it would be a good idea, we could call it "Slanging Matches registered users only" then people who are thinking of joining cant see all the arguments and be put off

Good comeback

All joking aside, all senior barristers I've met have a pretty comprehensive grasp of the English language.

Lawyers can also make errors

I well remember the case of trying to limit access to a local Council owned Cemetery.

Said Council drew up new regulations which were passed by their lawyers

BUT

1 ) you could not have a horse drawn hearse as animals were barred from the cemetery.

2) you could not enter by the vehicular gates [ so how the blazes was the motor hearse going to get access ? ]

3) you could not get access during 'normal' working hours

OH and as well as that this document had been issued under the auspices of the clear English Campaign [ or whatever its correct name is ]
let the education continue
